Has your horse nearly fallen over because he is so busy looking at other things, out on a hack? My ned nearly fell over on Monday because he wasn't concentrating and then blow me nearly did the same today because there were some other horses in a field which we were passing by, and he was so interested in them he forgot what his legs were doing!

Is it just my neddie or do your horses display this behaviour!!!!!

One of mine does too, I call him 'goldfish' for his attention span out lol. Has to look everywhere BUT where he's actually going lol bless him.

hahahah sorry this made me laugh! though it can be scary. my TB mare is exactly the same. she always does it in the same place, there's a field with a lonley coblet in it on a hill and he thunders up to the gate, she stares at the gate then sh*ts a brick when she realizes he's stood there. all whilst goin down a steep rocky hill haha. very dangerous but does make me chuckle :)

I think perhaps the new spring grass that ned is consuming with enormous gusto ATM is contributing to his frenetic temperament , he also managed to produce 3 huge dungs before we even left the yard this morning in all his excitement!!!!!!

One of mine does this, but now he just stops dead- even from caqnter- to stare at something and nothing will get him to move until he has finished looking. We have to pass a shetland at end of drive and he still cant cope with walking past without a stop and stare!!

Yep, mine does that.
He fell once out on a hack because he was looking at something... and I took a tumble as well, luckily I landed on soft grass and everybody was fine. And today in canter he wasn't concentrating at all and almost fell. I thought 'oh no, not again' but he managed to regain his balance and I stayed on.

This is why Dorey is called Dorey! After the fish in Finding Nemo!

"Wahay! Mum! There's a jump! and it's coloured! and soo cool... and... ooooh! There's a squirrel! Yes, Mum, there's a squirrel! Wow! It's awesome... WWOOOOAAAAHHH!!!! MUUUUUM! Where did the jump come from? Oh well, better jump it now! Weeeeee! Oops, missed, nevermind, look, there's a squirrel!"

I nearly killed it...

On an aside, if your horse is falling over lots, you might want to get bloods checked in case its ill. Stumbling, sleepiness etc can be signs of ragwort poisoning in it's early stages!

My boy does this. He's so busy looking at things and snorting at them, that he doesn't see the big stone sticking out of the ground! Daft sod!

Yep, whether walking out to his field or riding round a course of fences, his attention is often elsewhere. You have to watch your feet if you are on the ground, because he will happily tread on your toes without realising!! And when riding xc, when he was younger, he was galloping to a fence, then the next thing I knew, he'd stopped dead and swung round 90 degrees because he had obviously heard or seen something terribly interesting, so was paying no attention to me at all!!!
Keeping his attention is a real problem. At Milton Keynes Novice BE last year we were coming through the water and he was so busy looking at all the spectators that he almost didn't see the new jump in the middle of the water. Then because he wasn't really paying much attention he managed to leave a front leg on the ground, and very nearly rotated over the fence, all due to being too busy looking at what all the people were up to!!! Luckily I survived without a ducking....!!!

LMAO - sympatico - you have just descibed my mare - EXACTLY!!!!!! :)

OMG.... there's two of them!

Took her showing once at an arena with mirrors. We al just looked at her, prancing up and down talking to the GORGEOUS mare in the mirror and went "Hi Flo!"

Finding Nemo was based on Dorey. Or was somehow melted down and turned into her brain. Either way, it's even funnier to watch cos you can see her doing it!!

"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming!"

(queue more hilarity when I try talking to my unborn foal, currently known as Nemo, in Whale. "Hiiiiiiii neeeeeemmmmooooooooooo, iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii aaaaaaaaaammmmmmm yyyyoooooooooouuuuuuuurrrrrrr hhhuuuuuuuuuuuummmmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnn mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmm.... ")

Hi,

My boy does this too. I'l always careful not to let him stop as I think it will lead to other things but it is worrying when his body is walking forwards and he's clearly looking at somehting over to left and not where he's going!!!

Fingers crossed we haven't taken a tumble. He does tend to concentrate a lot more when we're in the school though I've just put it down to him being a nosy parker!!
