to add insult to injury joe is now refusing to drink, he hasn't had anything in the last 24 hours and with the pinch test i fairly dehydrated. i left him last night to see if he would drink on his own. if when i go down this morning he hasn't drunken anything what should i do?

first i would try whats surrgested
if not then i would call for vet cause if he becomes more dehydrated
it could become dangerous

Try putting a bucket of water from the field trough in for him. My friends TB would never drink water straight from the tap, it always had to come from the trough. You could also try really sloppy sugarbeet.

Also damp his hay and feed to stop that dehyrating him further.

Try sugar beet juice...or failing him drinking the juice if he'll eat really sloppy sugar beet that might help rehydrate him.

Bugger, she beat me to it!!!!!!!

I had to do this with Thumper quite a bit over the winter when he decided that drinking was not a good idea.

I also put a great big lump of salt rock in his stable, and started to feed electrolytes. He soon got drinking again.

if it is raining alot my horses dont drink i think they get all the moisture they need from the grass but if it is dry and they are not drinking you could try sugar beet juice apple juice pineaple juice carrot juice mint cordinal all in is water if not drank anything with in 48 hrs i would call the vet personally!

I have this problem with one of my horses at the moment, I have tried all the flavourings etc, my vet recommended dissolving salt and giving the pony a syringe full twice daily. I also give electrolytes.

If all else fails, put an apple or carrots in his water, him trying to get them out will get a bit of water in to him x

Try Ribena added to the water, few horses resist drinking this. If he does not start drinking or otherwise taking in liquids, do not leave it too long before telling your vet.
