What can i do to get my boy to drink more, he is on box rest at the minute and is drinking less than a bucket a day, his urine is quite strong and a bit cloudy. He gets his water changed a few times a day and always has 2 full buckets but just isn't taking in a lot of fluid. Had thought about putting molases in one?? Any ideas welcome thanks :)

we often find that ours prefer water that isn't fresh, in fact we only change it about every other day. perhaps just change yours once a day rather than several times and see if he'll drink it

A friend of mine puts half a carton of apple juice into a bucket of water when they are out competing. Her horse wont drink when out otherwise, but he'll drink the apple flavoured water.

Is your hay soaked?

One of mine occasionally decides he doesn't want to drink. I've tried various approaches but the most successful have involved sugarbeet. Best of those have been to chuck a good handful of beet in the water to make beet soup and making up the feed with very sloppy beet so that he has to take in plenty of water as he eats.

No his hay is dry he does get a wet feed though (calm and condition and alpha oil) thought he would have drank more if the hay was dry? Will try the apple juice tonight see if that works thanks

Salt licks make my horse drink 2 tubtrug (?) buckets full of water!! :) so that should work.
also if you soak his hay you can be sure he is taking in enough fluids :)

Well he was getting tucked into salt lick last night so will check when I get up to yard fingers crossed his buckets will be empty failing that will give him some apple juice. Thanks :)

As suggested by others soak your hay. Feed some sugar beet with every meal. Make up a very sloppy sugar beet drink. Add apple juice to water.

Could also suggest using HorseQuencher drink or using Simple Sytems Lucie nuts soaked.

Put an apple in the water bucket to encourage them to fiddle about with their water bowl.

My cob is very bad about drinking away from home, so i have tried all of the above! Good luck!
