what would be consequences be, as a one-off? I know horses drink a LOT of water, but wasnt sure exactly how quickly they get badly dehydrated etc

Would be fine as long as its had water during the day. I reckon a lot of stabled horses go a night without water for one reason or another ie pooed in bucket or knocked it over
eta: would also depend on whether its out at grass, on soaked hay/dry hay etc as to how thirsty it may get.
I wouldn't want mine going without if feddry hay for example but wouldn't worry so much if it were out at grass

Henry doesn't normally drink over night out of choice and he hasn't died yet!
He has a Trug Tub full of water and only occasionally will he have drank any of it!
I wouldn't like to leave him without though, even though he doesn't normally drink I like to give him the choice.
What are you doing to poor Bob now

sorry have i missed something?....how come you don't want to leave a bucket of water overnight?
how about a small bucket so at least he can have some should he wish..

LOL Kezz where exactly in my OP did I say I didnt want to leave him with a bucket of water overnight? Of COURSE I want him to have water 24/7/365 days a year

Horses don't graze constantly by water in the wild, they can go without for a while, especially if they're not being worked and are just grazing.

I've noticed quite a few times that my mare hasn't taken so much as a sip of water overnight when she is stabled in the winter. Her choice!

mine always drink a bucketful of water each per night, sometimes 2 or more.
when they're in the wild they might not have access to water for a while, but they are grazing in between, and grass has a much higher %age of water than hay.
i wouldn't leave mine without water overnight.
although there's a shetland tied up outside a gypsy encampment near Spalding and every time i drive past (about 8 times in Burghley week) it doesn't have any water.
