Horse not right - worried

Yes it is serious and and so many people just don't realise how serious a cough can be. Even if they aren't coughing anything up!
Often don't bring anything up until AB's work

My horse was eating fine and didn't have more than 0.5 increase in temperature. Just had what appeared to be a dry cough

When he was scoped they washed his airways out and the gunk was awful :(

Thanks soulfull, sounds just like roski to be honest. Ill ask the vet about a scope on Monday! Hope yours is doing okay now :)

I work for a Vets and Norodine is definitely not handed out willy nilly without the horse being seen first and a thorough check up carried out. I do know of a horse that was unwell in a similar way to yours, had to be scoped and was found to have a lung infection (after bloods having been done first). Said horse had the appropriate treatment and had to use a nebuliser, horse is now well and back in work.

Do you think it needs bringing up with my usual vet and say someone else in his practise is giving them out without examining the horse prior? Don't want to seem like a trouble maker, as I said I really like my usual vet have just been having a few problems getting hold of him.

I know this much, don't leave him coughing too long without meds, it'll be a lot harder to shift. Try and get the Vet out tomo, I know it's Sunday, but the sooner he gets the right treatment, the sooner he'll be on the road to recovery xx

Probably wouldnt go amiss mentioning it. Norodine is a broad spectrum antibiotic so thats perhaps why the Vet prescribed it. However, it doesnt make it right to do so without seeing the horse first. Our Vets would have seen the horse before handing out sachets of this, its normal practice. They may on occasion prescribe more of the same if its deemed necessary to clear any infection but would have seen the horse first in any case.

Yes thanks. He is doing great:)
I did have a horse previous where an infection in his lung went on to cause RAO/COPD
If he is coughing much I too would probably get bet tomorrow, and definetly would if he coughs at all in field
Please drop me a PM and let me know how you get on

I'd be tempted to kick him back out full time until either his cough clears or the others come in, and just give him soaked haylage to make up for lack of grass. If you're worried about him getting cold, just shove a thicker rug on. Walking around will help shift the phelgm.

My vet wanted me to keep him in gentle exercise for this reason

Oh good :) he's not coughing an awful lot, it's just the odd one here and there. Definitely noticeable and the yo said she heard him do one this morning. It's the general lethargy I'm worried about. Thanks, I will do :)

My 2 were the last out! I had to bring them in because my youngster was dropping a lot of weight as the grass is poor and if I put forage out roski will gobble it all quickly and not leave a lot for her so she'll probably drop more weight if I leave them out. And he can only go out with her as she is wife and he won't settle if he can see her in a stable! Catch 22 situation!

He's walking very slow to and from the field and yesterday just didn't react when I put leg on :(

Sorry but he's been 'off' for 'a few weeks' and you're still riding him and the vet still hasn't seen him?

Antibiotics should never be given if no diagnosis has been made. Aside from the fact that this is exactly why resistance to ABs is increasing (and because of this they won't work in a few years time),depending on the diagnosis they could be harmful.
At best, if its a virus then they just won't work.
If its something like an abscess it will stop it from progressing and make things worse.
If its a bacterial infection they may be the wrong type, or the wrong dose, and won't help.

You can't be too worried as, like I say, you've left him weeks and are still riding him, so I would just keep him warm and mobile and get the vet on Monday.

He's been off for 2 weeks, vet prescribed antibiotics. I gave him 2 weeks off and yesterday tacked him up to see what he would be like. I got off him after 5 minutes.

No, silly me Im not worried at all!! Yep been absolutely hammering him without any kind of regard to his health! Patterdale please read the full thread before writing a condescending and completely incorrect reply.

I did read the full thread. Those were my thoughts after reading it.
I'm sure you love your horse very much but in afraid I think you should have had the vet out by now.
If that offends you or you find it patronising, feel free to just ignore it :)

Hmm the lethargy is probably causes by lower than normal oxygen levels.

All you have to do to rectify this is to put more piles of hay out than horses, and always well spread out.

Not sure if YO will get funny about me putting them back out full time after I've brought them in. Think I will wait to see what vet says and if he says they need to be out, negotiate with YO.
