Horse of the year show back on terrestrial TV?

" Although it was strange not having the usual theme tune which has been around forever" .
That theme tune is Mozart's "Musical joke" I use it as my ringtone.

Personally I found the programme too much of a bit of everything. I'm sure they could have mad it a two or three part series.

I suspect it will act as a gauge as to whether they do more of it next year. I can understand them not wanting to commit to like 6 hours of programming from nothing when its not like they show any other horse sport stuff.
Exactly this……which is why, hopefully some of you might find the time to drop them an email…
Believe me when I say the television companies do appreciate complimentary emails….or even complimentary Facebook posts…..

Really enjoyed that. So lovely to watch a horse programme where the commentators don't assume we all know how famous rider XX is, or what "sired by XY our ot GZ" means, and how phenomenal a horse the stallion XY or the mare GZ was. Not at all dumbed down, but easy to follow and listen to. Drew non-horsey expert people in, rather than alienating them. And to see the coverage of all the other events that go on at the show too rather than just 18 riders doing musical dressage or 20 doing extremely high fence show jumping made a really nice change. The presenters were genial and personable, and the choice of people interviewed was really good for getting the basis and point and history of HOYS across.

I'd like the programme to have been twice as long - the 3 rounds of scurry driving was exciting, sidesaddle was mentioned but not shown, and there would have been other events there too that coverage of would have been fascinating to watch.

My hunch (may be wrong) is that this was a taster programme to see what viewing figures are like and how good feedback is.... if both are good, then next year's coverage may be twice as long or even longer!

Feedback sent to channel 4 thanking them for bringing it back to terrestrial tv and how enjoyable it was and hoping it would continue and possibly expand in future years.

ETA just received a reply from Channel 4 thanking me for feedback, glad I enjoyed the programme and that my comments have been logged and noted for the attention of those responsible for their programming and making of this programme.

fab. just submitted feedback.

Ohh my goodness! I remember being given special exemption as long as I did my homework, to sit up and watch this back in my schooldays in the 1970's. I recall doing the perishing homework on the bus on the way home so I could stay up and watch it!

Looks like we're only being thrown a scrap-of-a-morsal here, but hey, it is better than nothing.

Now we will have to face all the blasted adverts: just wait for it - we will get Pure Cremations; every charity out there with their sob-stories & soft music especially the so-called cash-strapped RSPCA; and tasteless ad's flogging Life Insurance. Not sure I can bear the prospect of it!

Whilst I agree that it was great to have some coverage, I’m going slightly against the grain to say I was really disappointed with it.

Way too many interviews and no where near enough action. I don’t mind some behind the scenes stuff, but it’s what goes on in the arena that’s the important bit for me. It was good to have a mixture of classes, but more coverage of what was happening in the arena in different classes would have been appreciated.

It particularly frustrated me when they were showing the scurry driving and the camera was on Matt and the driver’s husband watching not on the ponies in the arena. Plus, when they interviewed the girl who did vaulting and then didn’t actually show any, unless it was so quick that I missed it in answering a message on my phone.

I think I'm going to miss the end as we're going out. :-(
I feel I should get dressed in pyjamas and dressing gown to watch it, in memory of the last time I watched it on terrestrial TV. It used to be on quite late so I had to get ready for bed and watch it in my night clothes. (I was at school, primary school, at the time...)
Got changed during the adverts and we left just as the closing credits started:-)

I enjoyed it. I must be hormonal as I felt a bit teary during the section with the para rider (Tegan?) and the little girl who'd been poorly when she was little. It was very sweet.

Other thoughts....I didn't think the mounted ponies were having a particularly good time, while the scurry ponies looked like they absolutely love their job. I'd recorded it so I could fast forward through the dressage.

Am I going mad though? I swear MB said they were going to show ridden M&Ms after the ad break, but then went straight to horse and pony of the year.

I did laugh when MB asked Guy Williams to explain the puissance and he replied 'well its a big red wall and you have to jump over it'. 😆

I must be hormonal too then. That bit was lovely.

For what it was I thought it was a good programme. Clearly an experiment and pitched to try to bring in non horsey people. Yes it was superficial but what else could 90 minutes of a 5 day show be?

It was VERY much along the same lines as their Crufts coverage and so potentially they could expand to have a live programme every day as they do with Crufts. Let's not moan too much and encourage ch4 for taking this chance.

Watched most of it on catch up yesterday so no adverts. Fast forwarded the dressage other than Becky Moody’s interview which I thought was a god one. Could have done without Matt Baker at the side of the ring for the puissance but he is a very enthusiastic presenter and so hopefully that will have done good things for the more casual viewer. I have emailed Channel 4 with thanks and saying hopefully it may lead into daily highlights next year. 😁😁😁.
