If you had a horse on perminant loan and you buy all the rugs etc, aswell as all the usual like farrier, dentist, vet, feed,
would you be happy if the owner who is also the YO asked you if it would be ok if they rode the horse sometimes?

I have one on permanent loan but she is now retired and the owner has started to help a bit . She bought him a new turnout rug and now pays her vet bills.
Do you pay for the stable/ grazing ? I would expect some discount if the owner rides as well

Its still there horse at the end of the day and I dont think you would be in any persition to refuse them.. Im assuming you get the livery free or reduced if they are the YO.. so they are contributing,,,

Depends how often this happens - if you pay for everything (including her time to turn it out in the morning) and she then rides it reasonably regularly - i.e once/twice a week - then I think you need to talk to her about this and rethink the arrangement because that is more of a share than a loan and if thats the case she should be sharing the cost as well as the riding.

She really is on to a good thing if you do all the work and pay for everything and she still gets to ride whenever she wants!

she still owns the horse.. so shes still entitled to ride it if she wants.. and I honestly think you would struggle to tell ehr otherwise!

I don't think I agree with this. I currently have a pony on permanent loan for my kids (had her 4 years now). She came with a bit of tack and rugs, but I've bought a load of other stuff for her, pay all her costs etc, and I would be amazed if her owner ever asked to use her.

I also have a horse out on permanent loan with a friend of mine, who again pays all the costs and has bought everything for him (I think she maybe has a bridle of mine but can't remember). I wouldn't dream of asking to ride him - he is "hers" in all but name.

A few years ago I loaned a horse to someone who kept her on my yard and paid livery bills and other costs like worming, tack repairs etc. The only reason I rode her was because it was part of the livery arrangement, but I would never have asked to use her any other time.

So if you are paying for everything (including to turn out in the morning!

) I can see why you might not like her wanting to ride the horse, and depending on your loan agreement, I can't see she has any right to ask.

I wouldn't like it even though there's no harm in it. But like OP I don't know why I'd feel like that lol perhaps I'd feel slightly pushed out, jealous even, threatened? I wouldn't ever loan a horse lol

I really feel like shes mine, i was told at the start she was mine for as long as i wanted her, i love her to bits, even tho im a beginer and ive had a fall off her, shes my girl, we are both of a certain age and we .will plod along together lol.

I don't think I'd like it either although would probably have to just agree and get on with it.

One of ours is out on loan at the moment but he's not kept here so don't see him everyday. We go and visit once a quarter and keep in touch by text message but I wouldn't expect to ride him when we go and visit as they will do things differently to the way I do.

I've put him out on loan because he can be quirky and I want to know his future is secure but I don't have the time to ride him (he's only 12.3hh so as an adult it's not as though I can do that much with him anyway LOL). By loaning him I've handed over the control of his day to day care to someone else but if things weren't working out for him or if their circumstances change I know his future is sorted as he'll just come home.

If the YO is an experienced rider it may not harm your horse to be ridden by her from time to time or even regularly, as you say you are essentially a novice rider. I used to loan out my pony but if things were going a bit pearshaped would give her a few schooling sessions etc. I didnt "expect" to ride her though.

The last girl who had her on loan had had an experience similar to yours (previous to having mine on loan). The owner expected to ride at least 3 times a week yet the loanee paid for everything. I thought it was taking the pee!

You haven't said how often the owner wants to ride the horse? If it's just once in a while then I really don't see what the problem is. If she's wanting to ride all the time then I would find another horse to loan - if that is the case then it sounds like she's getting you to pay the bills while she gets the good bit!

Do you have anything in writing, any formal sort of contract? Would suggest you get one TBH. I have one for the horse I have on loan and I have one with the people who have my pony on loan. My contract for my pony says I can ride him if I want to, if I have a reason to (eg he went through a naughty bucking phase and I was going to go over to ride him then to see whether he felt like he was sore), and the contract for my loan horse says the owner can ride him if they give me notice. I've never actually been to ride my pony since he's been out on loan, and the owners of my horse haven't asked to ride him. Would be happy for them to if they wanted.

I wouldn't like it because if you have bought everything and have to pay for all costs then I think it is unreasonable for her to ride your horse. Okay she is still hers, but you are loaning her. She can still see her as she is on the same yard I don't think it would hurt if she rode her perhaps once or twice a year, but if it is going to be more regualr then you need another arrangement (reduced costs?) Hope this helps!

I think the owner is a bit tough on your charging you for morning turnout, so if she wants to ride then she needs to contribute to costs. I can imagine it might be difficult to come out and say this to her though (well it would be for me as I hate confrontation!).

i would also expect to have the horse fully if paying all costs
harder as the horse is still at her yard-otherwise im guessing it wold be less of a temptation for YO!if she was riding once a month it woulnt bother me.if its more than that i would expect a share or part loan and the costs to correspnd to that.
personally i cant believe she charges you for am turnout of her own horse and then says can she sill ride it!LOL
cant you move the horse to another yard and be a bit freer?she may not want to ride if the horse isnt at her place!

Like a lot of the others I've seen it from both sides of the fence. The owners of the couple of horses I've had on full loan never asked to ride them. If they had asked I probably would have said yes if they asked nicely, had a good reason, and it was going to be a bit of a one off - otherwise I would have asked if we could change the agreement to a part loan/share.

I did ask to ride and do some of the care (although not pay towards the costs) of the mare I put out on loan after it became apparent that things were going wrong and I was not happy with the level of care. After helping out for a week or two including riding I had seen enough and took her back!

In that case when I asked for permission I did give the reason that I thought the loaner was struggling to cope and she admitted as such when she accepted.
