I tend to get a little paranoid with my horse, stupid I know, however she has never stopped Showjumping at a fence since I have had her only 2'6 and 2'9 classes nothing too exciting she absolutely loves Showjumping, but is a little hesitant XC, I have taken her to a few XC 1, 2'3 and 2 2'6 which she went nicely at but I felt I had to ride her everystep of the way, not in an aggressive manner but in an encouraging 'everything will be ok'manner.

I thought I would take her XC schooling over portable fences to get her ready for starting out eventing, she put a stop in which is so unlike her now i'm being pathetic and thinking she will never make a XC horse and will stop constantly!
Stupid I know but shes nearly 7 and I have put so much work into her so will be gutted if she doesn't have what it takes to XC as shes not overly bold.

Please see the short vid of her putting the stop in right at the end am I just being ridiculous, was it my error..

Sorry feel a bit embarrassed about this but just want peoples honest opinions as I have worked so hard :-(

I don't think she put in a stop to be honest - she ran out the side door, but never really looked like she was straight for the second roll top to be honest.

She jumped all the others beautifully. Did you go round and do the combination again? If so what happened, and if not why not?! :)

I didn't see anything much to worry about at all - just keep her straight.
 
It is difficult to see from the angle but to run out on the side like that it didn't look like she had to step out too far, so we're you on course for the middle of the jump? She looked like she needed more direction on her angle and if you didn't give it she made her own decision. She is obviously new to it, I think you are worrying unnecessarily, that was just one of those things and perhaps she just needed a clearer middle road from you?

btw, have you ever gone XC schooling with an experienced horse and just let her have a blast at speed following the experienced horse so that she thinks it's fun?

Personally I'd book in for some XC training using the BE Training pages to find a clinic being held locally.
 
That wasn't a stop, she just jumped the first a bit awkwardly - you didn't keep her channelled between hand and leg, and it was easier for her to go round.

Rider error combined with a little green-ness on her part.

Nothing from watching that short clip would make me think she wouldn't event

I agree with this :) She's lovely!
 
I agree, she just went out the side door. She just looks as though she's at the stage where she still needs a really good set up from the rider, & she didn't quite have it for that one. Rider fault really, but not because you did anything awful or unforgivable, we all make mistakes. It wasn't a really bad approach, a more experienced or naturally bold horse would have managed fine from it, she just doesn't look ready to really help the rider out in a situation like that. I wouldn't worry about it. As an aside, there is nothing like hunting to get a horse bolder xc. And same as people, horses get bolder the more experience they have, so don't worry.

Hi,

She did go over it the third time when I corrected her - see vid - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9DYoRDBAVY&list=HL1361181727 - ironically she jumped it in the other direction first time!
I think I have been able to get away with winging it over the lower fences but I need to spend time working with the straightness, she is a pretty genuine mare and will jump Showjumps at any angle, I'm happy for people to say it was rider error as I can rectify that with the help of my trainer, just need experience but as I consider her as a 'baby' and quite green I don't want to push her too much and ruin her.

You got a little left behind at the 1st part and did not sit up and poss use legs for chanelling for 2nd element.

Lovely horse.
 
I wouldnt really class that as a stop (yes you would get 20 penalties if it was at an event) but she hasnt come round to the fence and slammed the breaks on in front of it.

Looks like she didnt read the question, fence is a very skinny barrel with no flags and she saw the easy way out and jumped to the side


I certainly wouldnt be worrying she wont make a good xc horse :-)

agree with the others, you also look to be tipping forward and dropping her a little before the fence. What a lovely lovely horse though and you ride her very well! It was just a little blip!
 
Yes, agreed, not a stop, she was a bit off the first fence, and instead of sitting up and doing something on landing, you sat there and did nothing. I don't think she even realised she was supposed to jump that second rolltop! I seem to recall those roll tops weren't in a dead straight line, so they took a bit of riding.

Your stirrups are also a bit long for jumping and especially XC to my mind, which will affect your balance and how quickly you can get organised after a fence.

There's nothing about that vid which makes me think she wouldn't event, it just looks like you need to work on XC riding technique, and to be a bit more focused as a rider rather than relying on her to jump stuff!

Hi, with regards to taking her hunting, I took her on a Lucinda Green XC clinic and she was incredibly exciteable and on her toes, she said 'don't ever take this horse hunting, you will die! ' sort of put me off a bit lol
 
Lovely to hear such encouraging comments from a professional OP *rolls eyes* your girl looks like a sweet mare, she just popped out of the side door - millions have done it :)
 
Tbh it was a bit of an oops moment from what i saw, you were left behind after the first part, she didnt look straight or held together for the second part, even the best horse if they wanted couldve scooted out the side under these circumstances, imo a combination of rider error and green horse, with more practice and her gaining in confidence she looks like a wee horse who could be quite an honest sort as she jumped the rest of the course nicely.

You lost your postion that why it happened she jumped slightly bigger than you expected over the one before .
Look at your leg postion in between the two fences it is really weak .
The canter got then too long you where in front of the movement and she ran out this is not a big issue and can be easily worked on .
Shorten your stirrups two holes ( you might be able to go up more intime but start at two )and work every day in this short length practise walking in the seat out the saddle postion and get the wieght down the legs in your feet and down the heel .
Work in canter in a circle going seat on saddle and into raised postion to build strength and balance in your position .
I would recommend some training from a event trainer who will able to help you develop your postion
I see apsolutly nothing in that video to make me think that your horse won't event in fact I think as soon as you tweak your postion you will have great fun with her.

Many moons ago ( I'm old and past it now!) I had an ISH horse that just needed to move on a little bit more XC. I did a couple of hunter trial pairs classes and he was a changed horse. Really got him taking me into the fences with a big smile on both our faces. Good luck you have a nice horse there.
 
She didn't stop, she skipped round an obstacle that she hadn't been asked to jump. Agree with others, steering had gone t!ts up.
