I teach these for the Riding Club, and we generally run them one night a week for 6 weeks, followed by the exam on the 7th week. I have also taught them as part of the BHS short courses run at our local equine college, and these are generally 4 full days (but cover practical stable management as well). You can expect to pay any hourly rate for the tuition, and then the exam fee and postage costs to the BHS which currently is about £16. Your instructor marks the paper, the BHS just "moderate" it and issue the certificate (which is rather a nice one). The horse owners certificates are great to do if you don't want to go down the Stages route or just want to broaden your horse care knowledge. Hope this helps!
Thanks. I'd rather do it over a coupleof weekends due to commitments at home, do you have any idea howmany hours it takes and the sort of price I would be looking at? Just want to widen my knowledge.
You are looking at about 12-16 hrs instruction, providing you do a bit of work at home yourself. The course Gina refers to above is run over 10 weeks, and is a subsidised course run by the agricultural college (am I right Gina, did you do Greenmount/Moy?). The ones I run at home are £70 plus the exam fee. You could do it in a shorter time if you had a good basic knowledge, did your work at home, and could find a registered instructor to set and mark your paper and send it in for you. They are great fun to do, and my students seem to get a lot out of them. Good luck!
