horse pacing

just watching horse pacing on telly. never seen it before-how starnge. do they teach the horses to pace or is it natural?????

also, why do they need those strap things on the legs and a bearing rein which pulls the head right up. looks unconfortable but my god they can trot quickly!!

I have a french trotter, (not pacer) that could not canter under saddle untill 4 weeks ago. when we started she trotted up to 30 mph. "sore bum" lol, it's so funny to watch when ridden.
But now her trot is so graceful and elegant and glad to say under contol, I'm so pleased that I brought her and would buy another trotter for sure their maner is brill....
Those's straps are to stop them breaking into canter.

I have an Icelandic - he is 5 gaited, that is he walks,trots, tolts, paces and gallops. Not all Icelandics pace, but it is a natural gait. A friend has a Standardbred, he quite often paces - looks a bit like a camel

i was looking into buying a trotter at one point and the man used to race it he said to me it ONLY trotts about 30mph so is the slowest one ive got. ha no way was i touching it with a barge pole lol,

At i riding school where my freinds work there is a pacer if you push her into a good trot she wont pace but if you dont she paces and it looks so weird we decided it looks like the front and ther back end are two different horses lol

Hi..I have taken on a 'trotter' just this May. She paced when pushed into a trot, and yes, its like two horses stuck together in the middle. Front legs doing one thing, the back something completely different.
She was harnessed and raced 3 times with the hobbles and bearing rein.
Since I have had her, she has learnt to trot properly and will do so 90% of the time. Even though she has raced, she has such a soft mouth and will stop with the slightest pressure on the reins. She has a lovely temperment and excellent manners.
She can also jump, though I have to accept that we might trot/shuffle/pace or even canter up to the fence, but at least you know however you get there you will jump it.
Went to see her dam and foal at foot, and yes the foal can and does pace, so it seems it is bred into them.
