Hello everyone, new on here and was wondering if anybody have any experience. I purchased horse 3 weeks ago, horse had been vetted 5 stage and sailed thru. After I got him home he was few days in field with only 1 horse, than hacked out for week and than I jumped him loose in indoor school. After the jumping horse went lame, had vet here to do teeth so showed her. She said give him week off and start again. She said she wouldn't panic, horse had week off but still lame. Sound in walk lame in trot. Vet coming out Thursday to see him again. What chances do I have if there's problem to return the horse and getting my expenses back? Than you

Thanks, it's nothing he would have done here, as I said he was hacked out for week and than if he jumped 5 jumps no bigger than 3 ft loose. Sound horse wouldn't end up with a problem ...

minimal unless you had bloods taken that you now what testing, horse was sound until what 10-14 ish days in? plenty of time to do itself an injury- presumably while loose jumping or turned out. Why wouldn't a sound horse be able to injure itself!? if only!

I think you'd have to be able to prove that whatever has caused the lameness was pre-exisitng and then either take it up with the vet who did the vetting or the seller.
Was it your own vet that did the vetting?

I didn't say that sound horse wouldn't injure himself, I said sound horse should b able to jump 5 jumps if that loose in controlled way, without getting lame. I am not carrot cruncher.... Know what am doing, just though I asked if anyone had same problem. Of course had blood taken it was 5 stage vetting

Perhaps he popped a splint while jumping or being kicked in the field. Sometimes does take some time showing up.
Depending on the reason for lameness you may be able to him back but does depend on the reason for lameness.

Thank you, the vet is coming to see him Thursday again. I hope it's nothing, but I am bit worried. He's lame on hind near, when asked to do trot transition he does drop that leg slightly....

a friends mare broke her hip overnight in the stable-we assume she got cast, my point is that you don'y know the horse has not injured itself with you and it will be up to you to pay for investigations and prove the horse has gone lame due to a pre-eixisting condition. even then it is difficult because you are only paying the vet to look and see if the horse is showing symptoms on the day it is vetted.

I'd get the farrier out to give the hoof a good going over as well - loads of abscesses appearing at the moment due to the wet weather we have been having.

Misha I know how frustrating it is but even loose jumping regardless 'how controlled' could have caused the lameness, he might have just landed awkward.

Did you have bloods taken, unfortunately the only way you could prove horse was potentially sold lame - hopefully vets report will give you a better idea.

Yes and I do hope that it's just something like that and with time he will be ok. I have had blood taken yes. Just worried longer I leave it less chances I have, if there is something seriously wrong.

He's been reasonably fit, done bit of hunting this year over in Ireland. It's not tendon, the vet did look when she was here first time. It's the strange step and drop in his transition which worries me

Very disappointing when this happens, but totally possible that the horse has injured itself in the stable, out in the field or whatever. You can't observe them every minute of every day can you?

If you suspect this is a pre existing condition then get the bloods tested. That is why we get them taken surely? If we get a 5 stage vetted horse home, and within a couple of weeks it shows up lame we have those bloods tested. Otherwise why take bloods?

I hope it turns out to be something very minor, but if not at least the blood results should clear up the debate about when exactly the horse first had a lameness issue.

Yes I have already rung the physio. I will get the blood tested for sure, but that will only show if he has been doped... It may b possible the horse will only show lameness if he is put under strenuous exercise... If rested the horse is sound.. I will speak to vet Thursday. Just though I will ask in case somebody on here has had similar problem.

If horse is lame the physio can't give you a diagnosis, the vet has to do that. If the horse is lame and you are up against the clock in any way (and even if not) get the vet to do a proper lameness workup. That's the only way you will really know what you are dealing with & whether it could have been pre-existing or an injury since you purchased him.

Unless it can be proven the horse had w problem before you bought it, I'm not sure.
A vetting in for that moment in time.
Horse could easily have hurt himself in those 3 weeks.

If it is something serious from before purchase, then get the bloods tested that were taken at the vetting.

I hope you sort it quickly and easily.

How do you know? Horses do things to themselves all the time. It's been loose schooled over fences, turned out in a field......

The horse was deemed fit for purpose on the day of the vetting. It was sound and as you say, sailed through.

Unless there is a problem with the bloods, I wouldn't have thought you have any recourse to return it.

I think unless the bloods show they had medicated it you will struggle to return the horse .
It depends why it's lame so that's the next step.
A lot can happen to a horse in three weeks .
Really bad luck.
I hope it's easily sorted.

Buy you had the horse 5 stage vetted, so horse would have been put under pressure.
So if needed get bloods tested, if it shows dope or Bute etc you know they were hiding something.
If it doesnt then sellers are innocent and horse has hurt himself since being with you.
