horse passport no name BD register have I read this right?

I'm trying to register my mare with BD she has a Wetherbys non TB passport and no name on it at all. I've just been reading through the BD passport and found this

If the horse/pony’s name has not been entered on its national breed society passport the owner can choose the horse/pony’s name, enter it direct onto the passport and inform the passport issuing body of its name. This name will be linked to the horse/pony’s unique identification number shown on its passport.

So does this mean I can write a name on her passport and then sort it out with Wetherbys, I've got all my teams paperwork and don't want to hold the process up by having to send my passport off.

Give wetherbys a ring. They can take a while when dealing with non racing passports so if you do need to send it back your best off doing it sooner rather than later.

Legally you cannot write a name in a passport and BD are wrong in telling people too. They can only be altered by a PIO.

Popsdosh is right - you shouldn't alter a passport yourself. BD may mean that you can pick a name and then send the passport off to the PIO to alter. Best speak to Weatherbys.

With unnamed racing passports, I have always written the name on myself for the purposes of affiliation BE, BS, BD. Having spoken to Weatherby's and was told it was going to cost over £100 for them to put a name on it, Weatherbys told me it was fine to just write it on. All affiliation societies were fine with it too!

Hi, I don't know much about this subject but surely you would need to register the name you want to use with the PIO otherwise you won't know if another horse is already registered with the name?

I'm not sure the PIOs are bothered about duplicate names. I have a pony passported under the name of Charlie and I'd be highly surprised if he was the only one.
