Does anybody know if there is an illegal trade in Horse Passports? I have been trying to figure this out but as I do not have a criminal mind I can't for the life of me think why someone would want a horse passport. I ask as I think somebody has stolen mine

I think its highly likely, would make it easier to sell stolen horses. A friend of mine has recently bought a horse which is very close to the description on the passport only the age was wrong and one small whorl different, I think the police have been informed as it is either a stolen horse or stolen passport or both

If you think yours has been stolen you need to contact your PIO immediately.

I have no doubt there is a trade in stolen passports, just as there is for human documnets and car registrations etc.

However with vigilance and the bottle to report these things rather than just turn a blind eye or walk away the trade should be small. Easy to say but hard to do when there seem to be very many people willing to overlook anomalies when they have their heart set on a particular horse.

I advertised my 16 year old TB horse for sale as a companion for £200 as he has old injuries that make him unrideable. This man came to see him on Wednesday afternoon last week. He paid me the £200 and took the passport with him when he left with the message that he was to pick the horse up on Thursday night. I never thought anything of this as he already paid the cash and gave me no reason to doubt him. I gave him both our house number and a mobile phone number to contact me. Originally he said he would just come and take the horse from the field if we were out - I said this would not be allowed, that I needed to be there when he left. Also that plenty people were around through the day to be here when he called, I have two close neighbours who could have supervised the end of sale etc.
This man did not come on Thursday, nor has he contacted me since, no call to rearrange pick up nothing. I do not have any contact details for him either.
Excuse me for been suspicious but how many people pay up for a horse, take the passport and then clear off?
How long do I wait for this man to appear?
My horse really needs to be in a home where he is with company of others.

There is definetly a trade in illegal passports. I know of 3 dealers in this area that 'issue' their own.
Cant see how anothers specific passport would be of use though, if all the markings are in there? Not sure if all passports are that specific.

Oh dear. The passport should legally remain with the horse. It does sound as though you may have just seen the last of your paperwork. Get in touch with your PIO now and let them know that you are suspiscious.

Some people are extremely relaxed about things and he may just be putting stuff off however loud alarm bells are ringing now as if he has the passport it may be that your horse, if its not picked up, will be giving someone else an identity OR if he IS picked up could be going off somewhere you would rather not think about (where the pasport would also be required).

Under the circs I would continue to try and get hold of this person and make your decision about whether you are willing to let the horse go (it may be you can get him to take his money back in return for your passport) or at least satisfy yourslef further as to the suitability of the home he is going to.

As I say though, get in touch with your PIO now.

Why go to the trouble of pretending to buy a horse when he could use an on-line site and buy a new one for a theoretically non-existant horse for about £20? Obviously criminal minds aren't as sharp as they'd like to be. Having a passport isn't proof of ownership anyway.

It seems a lot to pay £200 to steal a passport! He's maybe just been delayed or something. Either that or its a bigger market than you'd think
