Horse pawing food

Does anyone know how to help me stop my horse from pawing his feed bucket which in turn then knocks all of his feed into the mud, and then he carnt eat it up. I know I could bring him in but I have three other horses to feed as well. Ideas gratefully recieved.

There are a few different types of buckets on market that are pretty difficult to tip.

One is a bucket wedged in a tyre, another looks a bit like an upside down cone shape.

Or put a 'plate' of hay down and tip his food on it. Or tie his bucket to the fence and take his feed down in another bucket and tip it in.

good old bucket in a tyre usually works - did with my little welshie and my other mare.

My gelding would knock over smaller buckets but seems to have stopped now I use tub trugs

They can't help themselves hun. When a horse is eating in the wild, he's always walking slowly at the same time. In some neds the behaviour continues at a much lower level and they paw the feed bucket as they eat. Couldn't you leave an old tyre down in the field and put the feed bucket in that?
