A horse has had a plait put in its mane in the above area. The police have been notified so just a general warning to be extra vigilant. The horse is in a well-secured field right by its owners house, so hopefully no one will be stupid enough to try to steal it.

In stolen horses as well.

Sorry to bore you, just thought people should know.

it not only bores me but a whole lot of others too...

horses are 2 a peny ATM, why the heck would someone go in to a field and mark a horse that they can neither feed nor sell on in the current climate?
i would suggest whoever this horse belongs to, that they brush its bloody mane out more often

from your response i can only assume you have never heard of ' Meat market', please dont be so naive to think that all MM follow the same guidelines/rules.

please dont be so rude!

there have been plaitings and subsequent stealings going on.

stop being so damn rude!

op - be vigiliant xxx

Evidence??

This is just a re-hash of last year, when the rumours were doing the rounds. Nobody is being rude, just that it's not true.

No, it's not niave at all, I am just pointing out that there is not a scrap of evidence to say that horses are being stolen after being plaited in the field. Every single piece of photographic evidence that was put forward last year was clearly a windplait. I have not heard of a single horse being stolen in this manner. Why the heck would a thief alert the owner to the fact that the horse is marked? And the horse that ended up in Bangor, destined for Ireland last year, that was a hoax.

I would say the OP only has the best intentions. It is FACT that plaited manes and tails are markers for thieves. If not to sell live, then for meat. If I went and found Guy with a plait, I'd be on the phone to the police faster than you could say 999. Yes, this could very easily be pagans at work, but it does no harm to be extra vigilant. Our horses are too precious to be taken away from us.

horses have been reported to have apparently been found with clear defined plaints either hidden in mane or underneath the tail. To ignore this would be stupidity. I am always vigilant and i suggest that people do not dismiss these ' theories' but simply are vigilant. I hope NO ONE regardless of if they believe/take heed or not do not suffer loss of thier beloved horses.

Where is it stated as FACT?? It's scaremongering, just like the eastern europeans that were taking photos of people's horses. That was FACT too. I live in an area where unfortunately horse theft is quite common, due mainly to the fact that there is a large traveller population. They often steal off eachother to be honest. I have never heard of ANY horse being tagged in this way. I am in no way saying that people shouldn't be vigilant, but also they shouldn't believe everything they read on the internet either. I'm sure the police have better things to do with their time than investigate a tangled mane.

All i will say is that you need to be more open minded, if you are not sure or undecided about the plaiting and marking of horse then contact the organisations who protect or try to ensure horse safety and ASK THEM. You will learn a lot!

You sure will - and the main thing you will learn is that whilst dozens of people have been scaremongered into reporting wind plaits to the police there is NO evidence that any horses have been stolen following the discovery of windplaits, rather that there is evidence that the number of thefts has dropped significantly over the past few years.

You are all so so wrong

You should be so so worried, its not theives planning to steal its dracula planning which horses to turn into vampire horses! Tis halloween after all :D:p

Glastonbury - isn't that where King Arthur is meant to be buried, on the Tor? Maybe Merlin is going to borrow it to be a regal steed!

So tell me, why are these amazingly sophisticated thieves needing to mark their horses in this way? Have they not heard of camera phones? Also, can anyone provide a reputable link to a case where a horse was actually stolen after being plaited - a real case reported by the police, not one made up on a internet forum!

Anyway, you can foil these criminal genius types quite easily with the aid of a brush and some mane conditioner.

So yes, YAWN indeed:rolleyes:

What ever you think or believe about plaits etc it does pay to keep your eyes open. I dont see why people have to be so rude, after all it is a free country and people can post on what ever they like.

mollylolly. Let's try and lay this to rest for once and for all.
If an organisation receive information about what a horse owner considers to be suspicious activity they will record that information. That doesn't mean that they believe it is relevant, or important..they simply won't take a chance on it not being so. Sometimes official sources like Police Officers may also circulate information about plaits because the source appears legitimate.

The fact is that there is no evidence at all to link plaits to theft, none. I know this because I have spent many years investigating thefts and liaising with contacts nationally.

If one horse in the past has been stolen after having wind plaits in the mane that is simply a coincidence - evey myth has a basis in fact somewhere.

We should all be vigilant, all the time..but not waste time and effort on this sort of nonsense.

I believe that plaits are a sign that the horse is about to sprout wings and fly away, so anyone who finds one should be very worried and build an aviary roof over their fields. I have photographic evidence of this:

Note the mane, very messy, definitely room for a few magic plaits in there.

BE AFRAID! THE WHOLE WORLD IS OUT TO GET YOU! RUN AWAAAAAAAAAY!

Can you tell me why my neighbour's short fat hairy pony (the one that only she can catch) has been plaited and neither of the eventers or the retired pregnant (that would be 2 for 1!!) pony mare? And how did the thieves get past the 3 dogs and extremely noisy Guinea fowl?

Next question! If these 'horses' are being 'stolen' for meat, why bother marking one in a field? Why not just have the whole lot of them away? Or just the biggest ones to get the maximum meat value? Do they think that 'if we only take one, it will be ages before they notice, tehehe!'?

Dear Sceptical,
That is an excellent question and is certainly how horses destined for meat are stolen in Argentina (biggest supplier of horsemeat worldwide) I suspect the given answer to your question will be one of the following
1) The small, fat, hairy and uncatchable ones are marked because owners don't care as much for them as the big ones and won't report them so quickly
2) The small, fat, hairy and uncatchable ones are easier to hide in the boot of the car on the way to Dover
3) The small, fat, hairy, uncatchable ones realise that their duty is to protect the larger, more valuable horses and volunteer themselves

Op, you could look in the "stolen" section. All the facts about this legend, and the stats about horse theft, are in a thread there. It should set your mind at rest.

I'm open to people who want to place bets on the perpetrators being
a) Irish, with a van
b) Looking like they talk with an Eastern European accent
c) Muslim

Or all three I guess. :D

I'm going with all three. You can't trust these Irish/Eastern European/Muslim types!

That's probably why they have to use plaits, because cameraphone technology has not yet reached Ireland/Eastern Europe-topia/Muslim-land.
