Horse/pony locked in horsebox for hours....

They phoned me about half an hour after I first called them as they were in the area but needed directions to the exact location of the horsebox, which I gave them. I haven't heard from them since. Mum said the lorry had gone when she got up at about 7am, so either the police made him move it or he's just done his usual and driven it elsewhere. Police said that they would phone me with an update so will wait for a call later.

webble - I think the 'journey time' refers to length of time spent on the box.

Just to say well done OP (and OP's lovely mum) for being so concerned about this and having the nous to actually DO something about it.

Sounds like there's something very seedy going on....... at worst a downright dishonest person who's up to something they shouldn't; at best someone who's probably a dodgy dealer of the breed that one is not allowed to say on here.

Hope this doesn't happen again...... but unfortunately sounds like it might. But the more people who complain about it in the locality, the better basically; only problem is that matey will just go somewhere else and do the same thing, people like this always do.

What a daft remark. Travellers, you mean. We're allowed to suggest he might be a member of the travelling community for heaven's sake.

What we're not allowed to do is make derogatory comments about a race or culture or use the language of racial hatred. Which is as it should be. :)

Oh here we go again! How on earth can you automatically piece together all that information and just assume its probably a traveller?

I'd like to point out that I wasn't. :) i was simply disagreeing with the previous poster's statement that we're not allowed to say traveller. I don't see why he should be either. :)

I actually think its quite shocking the amount of comments I have seen on here where people assume something dodgy means it must be a traveller. I wasn't having a pop at your comment :)

phew ;)

I've noticed a pattern here that posters make unpleasant comments and assumptions about travellers while at the same time implying the forum doesn't allow anyone to say the word traveller.

Yes I've noticed too! I just think its wrong to generalise like that. I know many many dodgy people who are not travellers so I don't understand why if its a traveller doing something dodgy more people seem interested and want to add a little dig at the travelling community and its wrong because there is good and bad in every culture/race ect ect

Mum has spoken to him before, she saw him bring a pony off the back of the lorry from her kitchen window and his sons rode it around for a bit in a headcollar and lead rope, then it went back on the lorry. She saw him later on that day, so she asked him about the pony and whether he still had it in there. He flatly denied all knowledge of any pony and refused to discuss it - despite the fact that mum could hear it still....?

My money is on a low-end dealer. Buys in dribs and drabs, gives them a ten second ridden trial then either sells them on immediately or takes them to the nearest slaughterhouse. A bit like a small holder raising a couple of pigs per year. You won't get rich on it but its a few quid here and there.

Absolutely, I agree.

If there's a welfare issue, that's what we should be looking at, surely? The age race, religion, gender, cultural background or skin colour of the person is irrelevant.

People who turn it into a rant against one section of the community are showing themselves up as being the dodgy ones IMO. :smile3:

This sounds the most likely to me, too. Desperately sad for the poor ponies who may have little or no safe future, but not necessarily illegal.

Who knows what your neighbour is doing OP but it will be interesting to find out.

When I buy horses from far afield they usually travel 1 or 2 thousand miles so obviously don't get to me in one day. I actually choose to use shippers who don't use lairage yards tbh. I'd rather my horses remained on the massive articulated trucks. They always travel loose so are able to move around and hay and water is available to them at all times throughout their whole journey. The haulers I use have sleeper-cabs in their lorries and they remain with the horses. The artics have cctv so the driver can always see the horses. Mine have always arrived in good order.

So based on what I've experienced, I'd imagine the guy is either a low end dealer going from auction to auction or is running a horse transportation business. Not sure how you can say for sure that every horse/pony that ever travels in there has no water or hay though.

Yes its very common at shows for horseboxes to be used as looseboxes. I dont know why people think the worst, if you cant see inside the box how can it be definite the horse doesnt have food or water?

The chap certainly doesnt sound terribly responsible and the poor horse is no doubt between homes, not everyone's cup of tea but that doesnt mean he isnt looking after its basic needs

I know it's not ideal, but it's really not the end of the world for a horse to be stood in a stall for a number of hours (so long as they're fed/watered) as a one-off or regularly if it's in work. Loose boxes are quite a modern affectation, and horses have managed perfectly well with stalls or lines for hundreds of years. I have more of a problem with responsible owners who keep their horse stabled 24/7 when they get less than an hour's work per day. It may well be lonely, but so are lots of horses, and we don't go calling the police.

It's not just the length of time that these ponies are kept in the lorry for that concerns me, although I don't think it is acceptable and wouldn't dream of doing it to any horse of mine. It's also the suspicious way that he rocks up on a residential estate, with a different pony all the time, and as previously stated, any of the ponies which my mum has seen have not had access to food or water - I'm not saying this is always the case as I have no way to know - just going on what mum has seen. Also, when asked about it he denied all knowledge, despite the fact there was a pony in the lorry at the time.

As previously stated, if it was my horse/pony on the back of that lorry I would be very unhappy and would want someone to do something about it. If he has nothing to hide then he has nothing to worry about.

Agreed, I am not sure I would be getting involved myself, but I'm quite surprised by the amount of people that think this in an acceptable way to treat a horse!
