We are having to have my little mini shetland put down, in the process of deciding a date. I love her to bits and have had her for 10 years. I have decided that I want her put to sleep via the injection, I was originally thinking of having her ashes back, but the vets have quoted that it will cost £700 back to get her ashes back or £238 if they just to dispose the body. How much did it cost you to get your horses ashes back?

This is a lot more than what I was expecting, and to be honest I don't think I can afford to get her ashes back. Though I hate the thought of not having anything to remember her by, and hate the thought of just disposing of her.

So was thinking of maybe getting a potrait done of her instead? What are the costs of these? And can anyone recommend anyone?

Thanks x

Hi, very sorry to hear about you girl :( :( I have no idea re the ashes, but if you go to the 2010 equine arts thread in the PG, there are a lot of artists on there who do commissions. Prices vary hugely, generally the better they are, the more expensive!! I do commissions occasionally, but am by no means the best, pm me if you want more info x

It cost me just short of £1000 for the crem to pick up my 14.2hh pony after he was PTS, have an individual cremation and to have his ashes burried with a headstone. ( its what i wanted ) so maybe the £700 might be around the right price. It might be cheaper because he'll be smaller.

I had a portrait done by Pilar ( papafrita on here ) i was thrilled with it. Her is her webpage..http://pilar-larcade.110mb.com/ I had one done for our boxer too. Look in my siggy the pictures are both there.

Sorry about your girl xx

When my mare died it cost £475 for cremation and the ashes back and I was able to claim £250 (think that was the fig) from NFU which was their payment towards disposable costs. That was December 2005. Sorry to hear about your pony.

Had my boy pts in jan and taken away and ashes back and cost me 345 i think for them to pick him up and got my ashes back a month later although i think most come back alot quicker than that. The man we used was threw our vets and came from bedfordshire i think but they also had people from other areas who did the same.
