Horse prices! What would you expect to pay?

Yes, thankfully horse prices have gone up for reasonable quality animals that have been given a good early education. Because the good animals are selling well, it’s shifted horse price up in general which is no bad thing.

You can however still pick up bargains if you are prepared to invest in the search, travel and move quickly.

5k will buy you a reasonable raw horse that you will need to produce yourself.

If interested I know of a coming 4yo Cristallo x Billy Congo filly, easy to back last year but now turned away. 15.2hh, sweet but not showing sufficient ability to retain to pro produce.

I think it's luck of the draw with TBs as much as any other horse to be honest. I bought the welsh x in my profile pic as a change from tbs that break and he's just been diagnosed with bilateral hind PSD, kissing spines and Grade 4 ulcers- none of us saw that coming, my vet was staggered! So, in my (perhaps bad luck) horsey life, everything seems to break at some point, so i wouldn't necessarily be put off a TB, just buy a sound one!!

Seems it’s not just me then! Bit demoralising!

Worst time of year to buy too I suppose. I’ll probably end up saving over the summer to purchase next winter at this rate.

Don’t stop looking save and look at the same time often it’s marathon not a sprint finding a horse .
And pm ihatework about the one she knows about , she was the one who pushed me in the direction of the one I bought in November .

Have horse prices gone up massively!?

I’m tentatively looking for a new pony...14.2-15.2, capable of doing an 80 later this year but with scope to possibly do 90/100 one day. Doesn’t have to have competed as long as it’s jumping 80 at home now. 5-10 year old with no health issues.
I set out window shopping with a budget of £5k - and I am stunned at the prices now! It’s a while since I bought a riding horse.

Seems my budget (which I thought quite healthy!) would buy me a just broken 4 year old, an 18 year old or something with massive quirks/ugly/no scope and no hope.

Am I looking in the wrong places?? Or have horse prices changed so much in a few years? It was last like this before the credit crunch!
What part of the country are you?

Horse prices are definitely changing. A couple of years ago s "happy hacker" with no other potential etc cost around 1.5k around here (Shropshire) and there were plenty about. These days a good hacking horse is highly sought after and 3 or 4 times the price..!!!
Good buys are out there to be had though. I was convinced I would never find the big, chunky type I wanted in my price range of 3k. Ended up with a lovely 16.1 Connemara x Cob (Clyde x ID x Vanner type) 4 year old, unbroken for £1200. He does have an old splint but nothing that's likely to be an issue, passed 2 stage vetting. Even with another 1k plus about to be spent on his education he is still under my budget and I've had a genuine offer of twice what I paid as he stands.
I had alot of help/advice from people on here which was absolutely invaluable x

If you took 100 TBs and 100 Welsh xs, I'd bet that more of the TBs will be poor doers, have bad feet, go lame, be too much of a handful for an average person to ride , and die young than the Welsh's.

It's a game of odds, and I completely understand anyone who doesn't want to play the odds on a TB. My TB costs me an additional £500 a year in food over a similar sized mongrel stable mate.

Sorry you're having such problems with yours :(

I sold a 14.2 6yo connie who was competing at 90 ODE for £4.5k last August, nothing wrong with her, she is perfect and I couldnt sell her for more (I tried). Passed a 5 stage vetting and has never been lame, even hunting a season with the Ledbury. In a lovely PC home now. I think your budget is fine.

My mum almost bought a horse that was on sales livery with Mitty last year (horse failed the vetting due to eyesight issues, nothing anyone could have foreseen) and had a good experience if more feedback is helpful.

I remember telling my mum 2 or 3 years ago that I would need £5k to buy a nice all rounder - she laughed. Then ended up spending around that on a happy hacker just before Christmas.
The £3k bracket had a serious load of projects in it and not a lot else - 3 or 4 years back a project was £1000-2000!
So it makes sense that the actual nice horses are going up in value. (Bad news for those of us with no budget though ? )
