have never seen so many posts on the price of horses! is it always like this or am i just noticing them more as i am looking for one?? or is it a reflection on the greater financial market?

I am noticing there seems to be a load of people here that have a heck of a lot more money at their disposal to spend on a horse than me. Either they're very very good savers or I am definitely in the wrong job!!!

I can honestly say until last year when my horse went wrong I had no idea how much horses were worth, when I started to look I was horrified! I had my boy from a foal, my friend bred him & was then 13, so I just didn't have a clue!

I thought i had a fairly good idea of what my money would buy me, but it seems no-one sells an honest riding club horse for a penny less than 5 - 6k, and do we all want to compete on sports horses and affiliate at everything these days? what's wrong with RC and local shows, a bit of hunting in the winter? why do all horses have to be described as "go far in the right hands" and "needs a competitive home to bring out his best" it just makes me think i am wasting my money on a horse that could do more than i want to.

Whether one is breeding a potential world beater or a riding club horse, after the stud fee, the cost of rearing them is the same.

i think there is an opening for a RC horse dealer, no pretentions just straight forward hobby horses, and if there is one out there please let me know!
and i have to explain my pricing on our stock constantly and i don't mean to be annoying about price, everthing in the world costs what you can get people to pay for it. It has just surprised me that there is a jump at the 6k price from youngsters, happy hackers, cobby types, straight into Competion types

I still think you can get something decent for under £5K definitely. Have not paid more than £3000 for anything as yet (although not purchased anything for over 3 years). Still, i see quite a few advertised and am not/would not be looking for anything ready made I guess, just something that's done the basics and has the temperament to learn. we've done pretty well with our lot so far!

Love to know what I could get for my 16hh 17yo TB x connemara dun gelding in this market (I would never sell him though, just out of curiosity!), as a 4 yo we bought him for £3000 (that was v expensive back then) and he is certainly what i would call a fab RC horse, he does a bit of everything, I compete him and my mum can hack him out. He's jumped up to BSJA NC (would have gone further but i went to uni with him)and does dressage and x-country brilliantly. He'd do bigger courses than i have the nerve to, I have more self preservation these days and am not so brave!

People seem to be constantly looking for horses like him though so i think i must be very lucky!

(sorry that was rather self indulgent then!

I hadn't bought for about 9 years then last year when I started looking I had a shock at just how much prices had risen.

If you really really look you can still get a good bargain, bit of the who you know works wonders.

Remember what people advertise for is not necessarily anything close to what they actually get! It is surprising how every advert has a potential 4* horse who is 'stunning' with 'talent to spare' but when you are out and about how many horse do you see that fit that description? I also think it depends where they are advertised some publications seem to have much higher prices than others.
