Hi there - my name's Ross Copland and I was hoping this fantastic forum might be able to help me with my psychology project. I have worked with horses for about 6 years now, and in preparation for my uni degree, I'm conducting my own psychology project. I have already given this anonymous questionnaire out to my local livery yards and horse colleges and have had a fantastic response (238 samples so far), but was hoping that you could spare a few minutes to answer my questions. I'm investigating whether the level of turnout a horse receives affects their behavior in other everyday situations; I apologize for the layout of these questions - but other forums have found this the easiest format so far.

Note:

I am aware of the subjective nature of this study, however I aim to collect at least 300 samples to try and find a pattern of behaviour. Some points have been mentioned to me such as I need another question adding hacking alone/in company. All opinions are appreciated and will be placed in my evaluation. Where 2 answers for one question are given, a score of 0 is recorded.

The questionnaire works on a scoring system (eg: 1 point for 1, 2 for 2 ... 0 for 6) and an average score is calculated based on the no. of questions answered to eradicate the need to compare horses age and experiences.

I aim to collect as many samples as possible to ease the problem of behaviour and experience linked to age/breed etc... in paticular I need those who keep their horses in 24/7 - if anyone knows of a good forum for that I would be extremely greatful.

Horse A - 7 year old warmblood (hannoverian) dressage mare

Horse B - 3 year old warmblood (hannoverian) dressage mare

When horse A was kept stabled 24/7 (in professional dressage yard) she would have been 3 for most things with the occassional 2 - now she is pretty much 5 with everything! She used to do odd things like dig up her bed and move the entire bed from one side of the stable to the other and was very, very sharp to handle and ride. She is still sharp and on her toes as is her nature, but she is very good with pretty much everything. She was sold to me on the basis that she would not go to a professional yard as she was unhappy being keopt that way.

If you are scoring, then a N/A should be entred as a zero, not a 6 , is summing the aswers t o give a 'Goodness Factor'' score Then you can just add the points instead of having to change to 6 to be a zero score.

Then the number of zeros subtracted from 24, the sum of points then divided by this result to give an comparative score

Wow - thanks for everybody's help and taking the time to complete my questionnaire - yes it would have been easier to have N/A as 0 - but since I gave the questionnaires out I have to keep the format the same for a fair test, so am just changing this manually when I calculate a horse's av. score (eg: 23 questions answered, excluding q.1, all scored at 5 except q.23 which was 6 - the score would be (22x5 = 110, 110/22 = av. score of 5)

Oh and am just about to look at the link that L Cobby put on - thankyou so much everyone, results posted in about January
