What else can go wrong with my life??

My much loved horse was pts on Monday following a long illness & now I get a phone call today saying that on Monday I'm going to be offered redundancy, out of the blue. Haven't been there long, so basically I'll get 3 months' pay instead of notice, + 2 weeks' statutory redundancy as I've been there 2 1/2 years.

Feel truly awful. Was going to see a fab horse tomorrow that my sj instructor's selling which I was hoping would distract me from grieving for Cat, but now I can't.

Been looking for another job over the past year, & despite 4 A levels (Maths, English, Latin & GS) & 2 degrees (Latin, MA in technical writing) & 12 years' experience in pensions / financial services / all sorts of business writing, I haven't managed to get so much as an interview.

So when my payoff's gone, we'll be selling the lorry, etc. Not that I've got anything to put in it at the moment.

Am I the only person in the world that can't get interviews?? Why does no-one want me?? What am I going to do?????

Don't forget to ask them to give you a reference before you leave. Make a fab CV , put a photo on etc, be possitive and you'll soon find work.. good luck

I know how you feel, i have been looking for a job for about a yer and not had one interview either. I have decided to take another course of action now and go back to college and train to become a driving instructor. Luckily i can still do that around my current job though.

What about temping?? A lot of temping jobs lead to permenant jobs so might be worth looking into. And at least it will give you some money while your looking for something else.

Dont know what else to suggest really.

Bloody hell, you are having a bad time of it ((hugs)). So sorry to hear about your horse.

I'm going through a redundancy thing myself so can sympathise somewhat.

Fingers crossed things start to get better, I'm sure they will!
 
Oh god I am so sorry to hear your dreadful situation and can only offer my thoughts having been there too at times in my life.
What have you been doing so far to find work (agencies, prospecting, responding to ads etc)?
Also, what is your CV like (pm me if you like)? I might be able to offer some advice on improving that so you at least get a foot in the door for an interview...
Please do not take this the wrong way but have you considered some lower paid work (shop etc) whilst you are finding a proper job...just to keep the bills ticking over?
 
Sorry to hear all this - you are having to deal with alot at the mo.

I had several rejections when looking for a new job and they do break your spirit but soon something will come up - look at all your quals, you have so much going for you!!

Can you find someone else's horse to ride/help with until you are ready to get your own?

Chin up - my hubby's been made redundant several times now and each time has led to better things.

Are the company offering you any help to find something else, workshops or anything like that? Obviously with your qualifications and experience your CV is going to be good but sometimes a fresh eye can help on that.

I echo what everyone else says.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and it is just a bummer that you got the news about redundancy in the same week.

It will take a while to get over your old horse but the rest of it is just detail and you will soon be on your feet again and out hunting for your next new best friend horse.

I too echo what has already been said! Am so dreadfully sorry to hear of your news. I had something similar happen to me last summer, I had one of mine put down and then handed my notice in a few weeks later - I know that was voluntary, but still......... I do empathise with you. HUGE HUGGLES hunny - It WILL get better, both life in general and the grief!
 
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your horse and also the redundancy. As said something better always comes along just I guess bad timing for yourself. Chin up and although it does not feel like it things will improve soon
 
Not getting any help from the co, except maybe for a boot in the a**e to help me on my way...

So far I've tried agencies & replying to job ads on the 'net & setting up alerts so suitable jobs get e mailed to me, but I just can't get a single bite.

Everyone always says that you need to work hard at school to get good quals so you can get a good job...so why doesn't it work for me???????
 
Right, com'on chin up. Have a search on the net for websites like Monster and register a CV. Go through Paper and apply for everything - even if you think you aren't able to do the job, you never ever know.

Go look at the fab horsey, it will cheer you up.

Even get a job in a pub or restaurant to tide you over whilst looking for that illusive job! Its out there somewhere!!

Oh and another one is to contact companies out of the phone book/paper that you would like to work for. I've done that and its worked a treat! I'm in financial services too but don't know anyone around your area unfortunatley.
 
Join my club. I am the same as you. Got made redundant on the 5th of Jan. It was a year and 2 days ago I had to have my 1st pony put to sleep. Had my pony put to sleep on the 8th Jan after owning him for 25 years and my other for 27 years, my other half has kidney problems and has to have one of them out soon. And then I got a puncture and £91 for a new tyre. And I have finished work 6 weeks ago and only had 1 interview and still not job!!!!! But things can only get better. Can't they? Hugs from me.
 
So sorry to hear about your horsey. Please go and look at the SJer! You will soon find a new job to pay for him/her and you may regret missing the chance. Of if you don't like it, at least you will not be thinking "what if?"
 
Last time I got made redundant I had been looking for a while with no joy. I actually found it easier once I was out of work as I could look at temp work & I get the impression that a lot of companies prefer to take on people temp or short term contracts first to see if they like them. It also meant I could walk out of one place after 2 weeks when I realised just how gruesome it would be to work there.
Are there specialist agencies in your line of work - they might give you good cv advice (some are good, some aren't). Is there someone who can read your cv - are there the right buzz phrases for your area? Is it too long, too short, not punchy enough? I edit my cv to emphasis the areas that seem relevant to a job I'm applying for - when I'm hunting I end up with 3 or 4 versions of the same thing each emphasising different areas of experience.
Chin up - you usually find there's nothing for a while then you have 3 to choose from.
 
Sorry to hear about your job. I have been there done that and got t t shirt. Been paid to leave once and made redundant 3 times so far!! The last one diddled me out of every penny of my redundancy money. I work in finance and am currently temping for the NHS. There are a lot of temp jobs out there, I have been through several stints between my jobs, but have never been without at least temping jobs for more that a week. But you'll have to wait until your current job is all but finished before you can get temp work. Which agencies are you registered with?
 
Aww I am so sorry - what a crumby time you seem to be having at the moment. I'm sure it will get better. Wishing you lots of luck finding another job.
 
By the time I've finished tonight, I'll have e mailed an absolute ton of agencies...

Bought a house with paddocks & stables 18 months ago & I'm damned if I'm going to lose it thanks to this.

I will get my redundancy letter tomo apparently. I just want to leave right now with my 3 months' money, but o/h says that they'll expect me to work it. Can't face working there any longer tho. Totally can't be bothered. V much hope to get kicked out on garden leave - I'm 'key personnel' and also in Risk, Compliance and Audit so I know a lot of the co's dark secrets.
 
Somebody does want you - they just don't know you are looking for them! It all seems a bit raw right now and It's understandable that you feel the way you do. Things WILL get better. Keep your chin up and remember there's a bunch of us here if you need to have a rant or some support.

Really sorry to hear about your pony and your job. Horrible things always seem to happen at once. I've got possible redundancy looming, so I know how you feel (a bit) on that score.

I think with your skills though you should be able to enlist the help of an agency who will find a job that suits you rather than them finding a person to fit the job if you know what I mean? i.e agencies who pay their staff buckets of money to find staff for Blue Chip companies and the like.

A friend of mine changes her job every year - gets bored I think. She goes back to her agency, tells them what she wants, gets stroppy if they don't contact her within a week with at least half a dozen interviews set up, and bides her time deciding which companys' ethos she likes before accepting the job!

It wouldn't work for me because I've not got the confidence or the Degree, but sounds like you have, so go for it. Stick two fingers up at your old company and go out knowing you're better than that last job and they've done you a favour.

I feel for you. What a horrible time you are having lately. It probably doesn't help but I just wanted to let you know that I have quite a few academic qualifications too but I have hardly ever been able to get an interview. I finally decided to become self-employed and it has been the best thing I've ever done. Is there any chance that you could set up your own business using your existing skills?
 
Oh, how dreadful - it's really really not fair when all the bad stuff comes at once. Try to keep in mind that this is the low point... it can only get better from now (honestly!).

Both oh and I have had to find new jobs recently. We both found that the secret is to send lots and lots and lots of "round robin" type covering letters and cvs to companies. Often they won't even know they need someone new until they read your letter, or alternatively have just not got round to advertising yet. Your new job IS out there; it just has to find you.
