Horse purchasing… head vs heart

I’m not sure this is the place to come for a rational opinion ;)

one other factor is that however lovely a new horse is, it often takes longer than you expect to bond, school them as you want them, and have them ready for whatever it is you want to do. By buying now you can spend a good year or more gently getting to know each other and not feel rushed about that. I’m assuming with this that you do some sort of competing; if this isn’t the case then this comment may be less relevant.
Nothing to lose by looking. And if you have any doubts then you won’t rush into buying him. Good luck!

I think you need to make this decision before you view. No point in viewing if you might decide not to buy even if the horse ticks all your boxes.
ETA I think you’ve already decided ?

I think the opposite. I am reading the thread before i post (because I'm having a cup of cocoa after our morning walk) but I'm jumping in now. OP, I think you should view the horse with the thought in mind, 'I am not going to buy this horse because it just isn't practical because of my needing to keep my savings'. This will stand you in good stead for if there is any really good reason at all (apart from the $ one) for not buying. For instance, is the horse really going to turn out to be great? Is the owner going to be someone who you don't feel good about? (I don't like to deal with people I don't like. Why take the chance on being 'done' by someone who I feel is 'iffy'?)

So, to sum up, I'm saying don't buy the horse.

But, view the horse.

Then decide.

(I hope he's terrific and we get to see him.)

horse is exactly what I want

Lovely. It is always nice to find a good fit.

My question would be how difficult it would be to find a similar horse later on? If it would be easy that is one thing, if it would be very difficult then it is another.

My own experience has been that it is not so easy to find exactly what I want, so in this case, and provided that you are absolutely sure that you can afford / have time for the horse, then in your shoes I would be inclined to buy.

Do however take a good hard look at the situation. You need to be able to comfortably afford it, including if something goes wrong and you have extra vets bills etc.

Good luck, and do let us know what you decide.

I think Winters makes an exellent point: how difficult is it for you to find a good match? For me, it is difficult. Very difficult.
Anyhow, I am really looking forward to your getting the horse [excited grin]

There’s a horse sat in my paddock that crippled me financially to buy 15 years ago. He is perfection not rose tinted glasses perfection, just solid gold perfection. It’s a gut instinct and I don’t know whether mine is extra strong for these things or if everyone has it but when I like a horse if I don’t feel that anxiety and have a “just take my money” feeling leave him for someone who does feel that way. But as my husband tells me I am a 7 year old and ridiculous ?. Btw I can’t remember how much I paid for my little golden nugget.

I was in this position recently.

I'd sadly lost one of my boys and decided sticking to just 2 horses made sense anyway- cheaper, easier, they got on well, better for the ground in winter etc.

Then saw my 'ideal' horse for sale when I was just browsing, bored ?
Flashy
Chestnut
Leggy
Beautiful breeding

Cheap enough as breeder terrible at writing an advert and taking photos.

So now we are back to 3 horses, have less money and no time but heart definitely ruled head!

Wow - those legs. Is it an optical illusion or are those legs as long as they look?
