Ok, my mare has just had a hoof absess burst out of the coronary band on her nearside front hoof. The vet has flushed it out with an iodine soloution and she has a hot poultice on to night and will be kept in for a week. My main question is how the hell do I get this gross horse pus smell off my hands!!!! I have washed them a million times, but my hands are still so potent it's making me gag!!!!! Any suggestions apart from chopping my hands off!

can you get hold of some betadine or povidone iodine wash/surgical scrub (has to be the soapy one otherwise your hands go yelLow! ) - works pretty well

- or long soak in hot v smelly bubble bath

- or lemon stinky stuff - I have some great lemon foot stuff (body shop) that I bought for OH that works well!

Hibi doesn't work so well - the iodine smell seems to cover up the pus smell - but good old fashion lemmo works well

I'm afraid you learnt it the hard way...im not even a vet yet but already at vet school they've taught us never to change poultices without gloves on...especially if you've got a hot date!
