I'm making a book dedicated to a horse that passed away a few years ago. I know his owner (Also Ned's owner) still misses him and I really hope to give her a really special gift this year :)

It's getting increasingly difficult to make her special gifts each year! First year I made her a mug with all the horses around it, last year I made her a calendar with a different horse for each month.
Hopefully this book will include photos, quotes and messages from all who loved him.

Anyway, some funny, inspirational or simply nice horse quotes would be appreciated!

One from the Fatherland:
Menschen mit Pferden
haben den Himmel auf Erden
Aber kommen sie zum Sterben
gibt es nichts zu erben. ;-)
Tongue in cheek, roughly translated: people with horses know heaven on earth and are always skint (so don't expect an inheritance from them ;-)

"there are friends and faces that may be forgotten, but there are horses that never will be"

"A racehorse is an animal that can take several thuosand people for a ride at the same time"

"Somewhere in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again."

"You can tell a horse owner by the interior of their car. Boots, mud, pony nuts, straw, items of tack and a screwed-ip waxed jacket of incredible antiquity. There is normally a top layer of children and dogs" - Helen Thomson b1943.

"The daughter who won't lift a finger in the house is the same child who cycles madly off in the pouring rain to spend all morning mucking out a stable" - Samantha Armstrong.

"Even an E-Type Jaguar looks merely flash beside a reallt smart pony and trap" - Marion C Garretty.

These 2 actually make me a bit teary when I read them, 2nd one not a quote but a short poem that they used to read at Olympia, author unknown but it was written about 1912 I think, it's called The Horse

Nothing is more sacred as the bond between a horse and a rider. No other creature can ever become so emotionally close to a human as a horse. When a horse dies, the memory lives on, because an enormous part of his owner's heart, soul, and the very existence dies also.

Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle
And strength by gentleness confined
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.
England's past has been borne on his back.
All our history is in his industry.
We are his heirs, he our inheritance.

They used to print that one ^ in the front of CAM equestrian catalogues :p

I always liked Ogilvie's A comrade - You only know him groomed and combed / and bridled on parade / I know the paddocks where he roamed / where he was roped and made etc.

One of the commonly repeated ones I like is "A canter is the cure for every evil" which I think was Disraeli...

"A stubborn horse walks behind you, an impatient horse walks in front of you, but a noble companion walks beside you"

"I have seen things so beautiful they have brought tears to my eyes. Yet none of them can match the gracefulness and beauty of a horse running free"

"When we think of those companions who traveled by our side down life's road, let us not say with sadness that they left us behind, but rather say with gentle gratitude that they once were with us"

That's such a lovely idea!

"To ride a horse is to ride the sky".

"The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire." (Sharon Ralls Lemon)

"Horses lend us the wings we lack."

The left side is the right side, and the right side is the wrong side.
-Maxim about where to mount and dismount.

Anyone who is concerned about his dignity would be well advised to keep away from horses.
-Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

When your horse follows you without being asked, when he rubs his head on yours, and when you look at him and feel a tingle down your spine...you know you are loved.
John Lyons

One can get in a car and see what man has made. One must get on a horse to see what God has made.
Author Unknown

You and your horse. His strength and beauty. Your knowledge and patience and determination and understanding and love. That's what fuses the two of you onto this marvelous partnership that makes you wonder, "What can heaven offer any better then what I have here on earth?
Monica Dickens

A horse will never tire of a rider who possesses both tact and sensitivity because he will never be pushed beyond his possibilities.
Nuno Oliveira

"Horse - uncomfortable in the middle and dangerous at both ends."

But I do like this

"If God made anything more awesome than the horse, he kept it for himself"

"The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears" Arabian proverb

"There's something about the outside of a horse which is good for the inside of a man" Churchill

My instructor's instructor has a saying about riding difficult horses (you have to say this one with lots of drama): 'to be a great rider, you must be prepared to die'. But maybe that's not appropriate!!!

I like 'riding is the art of keeping a horse between you and the ground'.

:-)

I'm sorry if someone already put these on, but theses are my favourites:):
"Ask me to show you poetry in motion, and i will show you a horse"
"People come and go but horses leave hoof prints on your heart"
"A horse is an angel without wings"

When my best ever horse friend died a (human) friend sent me a card and in it, was written.
Somewhere.....Somewhere in time's own space
there must be some sweet pastured place
Whose creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go,
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again

I keep it on my desk
I was also once told
Poor men breed horses for rich men to ride
Having bred horses I indentify with that one.I have a piece of paper somewhere with more on I'll look later and post them if I find them.

Dont Cry for the Horses
They were ours as a gift, but never to keep
As they close their eyes forever to sleep
Their spirits unbound
On silver wings they fly
Those beautiful horses
Against the dark sky
Look up in to heaven
You'll see them above
The horses we lost
The horses we loved
Manes and tails flowing
As they gallop through time
They were never yours - they were never mine
Don't cry for the horses
They'll be back some day
When our time is due
They will shows us the way
Do you hear that soft whinny?
Close to your ear?
Dont cry for the horses
Love the ones that are here

Apologies to both Mary Poppins and Goldenstar!!
