I hope somebody can give me some advice on what to do....bought a little horse for my daughter from dealer a couple of weeks ago which had apparently hunted here and in Ireland. Took it hunting and it was really wired and kept doing half rears - put this down to nerves etc. Called dealer on return to say I wasn't happy and he suggested doping it and taking it again. Duly did that and it was better so repeated experience a few days later. It was dotty and went right up with me (and lucky not to go over backwards) so went home and called dealer to say I wasn't at all happy and wanted to return it. He mentioned having a new shipment from Ireland later in week and swopping it . When I called again a few days later put phone down on me and now not returning calls. What can I do? I think the horse is unsafe for my daughter (not to mention me!). I would appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Many thanks

Whcih dealer? Pm me if you like.
I think you need to go straight to Citizens Advice or a solicitor, a recorded delivery letter needs to be sent and all sorts of procedures followed.
A friend just got a well known dealer to take back a 'made' hunter who nearly killed her - it took a year but she did get livery fees paid as well!

Get legal advice, NOW.

That is just not on, surprised you doped the pony to go hunting, but hinsight is a wonderfull thing I suppose.

Good luck

I have to say and its by the by now, but for further reference, any animal you have to dope to ride - I wouldn't class as suitable for my daughter.

I feel very sorry for you. What kind of horse is your daughter looking for anyway?

You said that the horse had apparently hunted here and in Ireland.
Can you find out with which hunt it was with and then ask around as to how it behaved on those days ?It might give you some come back with the dealer if it was naughty before.

Horse is not as described, therefore you have every right to get your money back.

Two quick questions though - what bit is the horse in and have you had a saddle fitted?

It has a very light mouth and was in french link snaffle and no I hadn't yet had saddle fitted. Don't think this was problem (altho of course it may have been) as it was absolutely electric from the moment it was unboxed.

Looking for a 15-15.1 all rounder to hunt in winter and do PC/event in summer

That really shouldnt be too hard, what budget are you looking around? And how capable is she?

Nothing too too expensive but did pay prob over the odds for this as the horse is very good looking. Daughter is capable and nice quiet rider but a bit cautious unless her blood is up!

It was fit and looked very well too. Tried it once for about an hour and a half on their premises - should have done more and gone back again and taken it somewhere else (with the benefit of hindsight....)

Pop down and see him ! Just pretend that he has been ignoring him and act as normal as poss (keep the shaking on the inside) I would just say "thought I'd pop over as I was passing to see these new ponies you have in ... your still ok to take that other one back this weekend right ?"(close questioning can only answer yes or no!) poss take a man with you (I hate to say this but even just as a silent partner that sits in the car I'm sure you can deal with this) It is likely that he is just chancing his arm - we are all struggling at the moment. If you get a "NO" as the answer or even a flicker of grief get in the car an leave then do what everyone else says and seek advice ! Horrid situation to be in especially for your poor daughter who no doubt just wants a nice pony to have fun on !

Good luck

Had it been exercised before the journey?

Did you try it out before buying?

(sorry for the Qs)

Also - did you have it vetted?

Exercised before which journey - sorry if I'm being thick. We did try it out for a hour and a half at his premises and it behaved very well and yes. had a 5 stage vetting which it passed with no probs.
Thank you so much everyone for your advice and good to feel I'm not alone. It's all a bit of a nightmare as now have horse in field which I dont want.

Sorry to hear you and your daughter are having such a horrible experience. Did your vet take bloods at the vetting, if so, then definitely would be worth testing them to see if there was any kind of sedative used?

Very bizarre then. Assuming it wasn't doped at the dealers, how long have you had the horse?

Seems very weird it would be fine at the dealers and yet not fine when it came off the lorry at yours. Makes me wonder if it's just stressed at a new place, not a good traveller etc etc

If it makes you feel any better - I do know of a LOT of horses that are totally un-huntable, so the owners just don't

Obviously if this is something you want to do then you have been sold a horse thats not as described and you are within you right to get a refund - as has been said.
