its mainly when we're out competing but sometimes at home. Whenever i give him a longer line in canter he will just refuse, He wont refuse from trot though but how can i stop him refusing from canter?

Can you have lessons with a qualified instructor? There are just too many reasons which could be causing this for a forum to help on just two lines. The first dozen or so possibles...pain, tack, confidence, rider position, age (yours and his), surface, boots / no boots, nerves - his and yours, ability to see a stride - his and yours, experience. And that is just in the first 30 seconds or so!

The best thing to do is to get his back, teeth & tack checked to be sure he isn't sore anywhere and then book some lessons with a qualified instructor and get sorted.

It can be so disheartening ,and can affect your confidence permanently. So take shays advice and get a good instructor to help you . Good luck .
