Horse refusing to pick up contact on outside rein

On both reins? Either your horse is very stiff / has a physical problem or you are not riding him correctly.

You need to make sure that your OUTSIDE rein is supportive and consistent in the contact and you need to open, lift and give with your inside rein as well as keep your inside leg on to create flexion and bend.

On a straight line does he take contact in both reins? equally?
Ok, you know what is coming next, teeth, back, muscles equal both sides of his body, injury etc checks, and also are you straight yourself, stirrup lengths, saddle tree etc?

Yes :D When we are down the centre line he has a lovely elastic contact on both reins and the same when hacking,

Teeth were checked aout 1 month ago, back - physo therapist was out last week, Muscles are equal, if not more on the right rein as he has a habit of changing reins himself when lunging/loose schooling.

No injurys, I am straight as can be, did one of those fancy assesments things at a local EC where there is a sensor under the saddle and it tells you your balance, mine was right - 47% and left - 53%

He is ridden in a bareback saddle pad so there is no tree
