Hello!

I'm just looking for reassurance really! My horse (a cob, aged around 8) suffered a bout of colic on Christmas Eve. It was spasmodic colic and appeared to resolve after the injections from the vet- no tubing or surgery required, so quite a straightforward colic :)

Since the colic I've eased him back onto food gradually, as instructed by the vet. He was back on hard food the day after (Christmas Day), although a smaller portion. He's now on hi full size feed, which he is eating as normal. He's also on haylege, which he is eating.

What I'm slightly concerned about is that he isn't eating any treats. I don't want to debate on whether it's good or bad to give treats :p But he normally has a couple of treats a day, either apples or herbie treats. Since the colic he is refusing these treats. He did eat a carrot the other day, but the other treats which he normally goes crazy for he is rejecting or taking and then spitting out.

Is it just that he is cautious because of the colic or he's just gone off them? Or should I be concerned? This is the first time he's had a tummy problem so I'm not sure if this is a normal reaction.

Thanks in advance :)

my horse has spasmodic colic normally twice a year! she's never refused treats afterwards, however, she doesn't get them that often!!

so I would double check with your vet and see what he thinks.

Would he have had the treats around the time he colicked? Maybe he is just a bit wary of them because of that, you know like when you are ill and whatever you had during that time turns your stomach to look at it afterwards (for me its anything that combines lemon and cream because of some lemon cream flavoured medicine *shudder*)

If he is eating his feed ok then I shouldn't worry too much.

You may find he's just a bit sensitive at the mo to anything sugary.

My boy severely coliced Xmas eve ... Not the best timing huh! He was ok boxing day & the 27th, then went a bit weird on Saturday, put it down to him being tight, sore and uncomfortable still. He then went lame too, hasn't been himself at all, my paranoia has been getting out of control ... last night he had a nose bleed on top of everything else! ARGH!

I shouldn't worry about it, they bounce back after a while - some quicker than others!

Funny you should say that! My boy had a nosebleed this morning. I put it down to him squabbling with the pony next door (it was bright red blood).

I still don't think my horse is 100%, beyond the treat thing. We hacked today and he was very keen but knackered afterwards. And he's been holding himself quite tightly, like he did when he colicked (I was riding him at the time, only in the walk as he'd had a week off with an eye injury) but loosens up after a couple of minutes. He's back in the field now though so I'm hoping he'll sort himself out soon :)

Nice to know I'm not alone, though not so nice for the poor pones! It's only been six days so think they while need a little while yet to get over it. Mine had nephrosplenic entrapment so he will definitely be sore and tight, over the weekend his gut has been excessively noisy to the point where I was watching him all the time in case he had spasmodic colic! Not had much sleep or enjoyment over the festive period!!!
