Ok so I have a right arm that can't straighten out properly because I fell off a horse and dislocated and fractured my elbow.
I fractured my tibial plateau in my left knee which was pinned and plated and I had a bone graft taken from my pelvis as I compressed the bone by 2 cm. Last year 2009 I tore the cartilage which was completely removed, meaning now I cannot straighten my left knee and walk with a limp. I will need a total knee replacement in 5 years time.
I had a bunion removed (non horse related) from my right foot but the first time I got my horse in from the field after this I had a stress fracture of the 3rd metatarsal and now limp slightly on that too.
Not to mention my bad back and sciatica, and of course my neck problems....

So why on earth do I still ride and have a horse?!!!

So what are your horse related injuries?

Umm... a sprained ankle which is still weaker than the other and can affect me in prolonged periods of rising trot. And, of course, the loss of many many brain cells through bumping my head when I fall.
I did once split my skull cap when it took the impact from the fall and I had mild whiplash and a nasty headache due to this but none has been lasting.

I have my fingers crossed that I remain this lucky!

Hmm, well nothing too horrific. Couple of sprained ankles, concussion, broken ribs (caused by coming off and horse cantering over me), a few black eyes, a cracked little toe and the ubiquitous bad back and dodgy joints - have damaged soft tissue in both shoulders, displaced my pelvis and several vertebrae. should have regular visits to the chiro but guess what - I give up mine so that the horse can have his!

Yieks Taffyhorse - nothing too horrific?! Your list sounds pretty painful! I've had a broken wrist, concussion and stitches. Frantically been pointing out that my horsey has done nothing...!

You are a very brave lady S and I can say that after seeing you following your fractured tibial plateau and then the bone graft from your Pelvis

I have been very fortunate (fingers and toes crossed) and currently only have problems with my back ... and that is related to Motor and his constant jogging for all those years and miles and miles, bless his little cotton socks

I normaly land on my head (not much to damage there

) but in aug 2008 a young cob i was riding reared up and came over backwards on me in the road and i ended up with a broken hip and wrist. The wrist was just put in plaster but my hip had to be pinned and plated back together. I spent 3 1/2 weeks in hospital and they told me it would be 6 months till i could walk again and that i should never ride a horse

and 2 months after that i was hunting

I still limp though. At an endurance ride in the summer the paramedics chased me across the lorry park because they thought i was injured

My boss told them they where 9 months to late

Ouch! Bet that hurt.
I got on my horse again 4 months after breaking my knee, and a year to the day I went for a good gallop on him!
PMSL at paramedics!

shattered baby toe which will never properly heal, sodding over weight cob spooked and landed on it!!!

i have a reoccurring left shoulder injury i'm not sure if it is horse related or not but every so often it rears its ugly head and i then can't ride as my mare can easierly get the better of me.

Bless Motor does he still jog everywhere now?

You would think it would hurt but i'm a freak, When i went into hospital they would not believe i had broken my hip (although i kept telling them i had) because when they asked for my pain score i said it just ached. I finaly went in for my x ray and the doctor came rushing in took one look and asked me if any where else hurt. I said " my wrists a bit sore but look i can do this" and waved my hand around like a loony. He asked the man to x ray my wrist to and thats when i discovered that was broken to!!!
The doctor came to see me and he said "i have some good and bad news for you. The bad news is your hip and wrist are broken but the good news is you have a very high pain threshold child birth will be easy for you"
Funnely enough i wasn't thinking of childbirth right then but i have hurd that hurts so i wonder how much the hip should have hurt.

But my mum did always say no sence no feeling

Severed Ear!! I was kicked in the head & my hat shattered and a piece of it literally sliced my ear off. It was reattached by micro surgery & my perforated ear drum was also repaired surgically as it was a real mess

Seahorse I have done exactly same thing to my elbow from having a rotational fall over a 2' high showjump....not fun. Apart from the odd concussion I've been lucky!

On 11th July 2009 I was on my friends younster that reared over backwards and landed on top of me. I sat up and my foot was facing the wrong way! I had broken my talus (an ankle bone) into four and snapped my fibula which broke through my skin!

In February 2009 Sammi did his Superman impressionation and failed miserabley after jumping 7 yards out from a jump, landing on it and getting poles stuck through his legs, somersaulting over and using my face as a boogie board across the paddock. Cue blood everywhere from my teeth going through my bottom lip save a thin layer of skin, concussion and bruising from head to toe literally.
crazy.gif

The day before I was due to go on holiday to Bali for 2 weeks when I was 14, Sammi slipped on the road, fell over on his side, (I assume I got sent flying out of the way as I wasn't stuck under under him), and I cracked my elbow. Astonishingly, there were cars coming from both directions that had seen what had happened, no one stopped, no one asked if I was okay, no one asked if I needed any help, and they all just drove around us! I had got up before Sammi, I think he was in shock as he got away with a finger print of hair scraped away!

When I first started clipping Sammi when I was 16, he use to be a handful and smacked my head off the wall and cracked my tooth and half of it fell out!

Someone please remind me why I still have horses.... xx

Fractured pelvis (kicked by youngster), broken foot (pony used me as a launch pad

), concussion, the usual cuts and bruises. Black eyes and bruised ass after my last horse had a strop at me
frown.gif
I broke a leg (not horse related) and now have a nail from knee to ankle, but it makes me ride in a peculiar way - cannot sit still for too long as it cramps up.

Yours all sound awful though - glad you are all OK

He spent the first 6 years jogging everywhere, then the next few years rushing and doing silly steps, but not so much jogging. We then went through the awful Laminitis and over the last 4 years he has been a 'normal' horse. He was very quiet during the Summer, but now I have back the silly whizzy 'I will not wait for anyone' pony back and tbo I have trouble pulling him up in trot .... love him

I have dislocated and fractured both elbows and have virtually full movement in both. The first time I was told i would be lucky to get any movement back and the second time I was told 50% max. The first elbow was broken in 6 places so not really a fracture. Carrying buckets of water and riding a strong horse across country worked wonders!

My biggest probs come from my feet! Trapped nerves which i honestly think are due to being trodden on. One of my toes doesnt move at all! And then there is my knee...
crazy.gif
Oh and my shoulder...Did ligaments putting up the horsebox ramp..

But hey! We only live once!

My darling little pony chucked me off in June and I landed heavily on my right leg, the sole of my foot was facing me which was odd, and when I looked down, my bones were popping out where my foot should have been, wasn't pretty.

After x-ray, they discovered I had broken the ankle and bottom leg area in 9 places, had to have 2 lots of surgery in which they put me back together again with metal plates and screws.

5 months later, I started riding again. Its now been 7 months and u'd never know I'd bust my leg that badly, I've no limp and it doesn't even hurt anymore, so just a distant memory - a bit like childbirth lol x

Oh and Laura, unfortunately I didn't have the same pain threshold, I squeeled like a little piggie lol x

Hey that morphine is good, sure many of u will have had it with the injuries you've had, I was well away with the fairies, not impressed tho when they took it off me and offered me paracetamol - WTF !
laugh.gif

i have had broken arm, breoken elbow arm that doesnt straighten properley , 2 broke ankles a broken pinky a busted nose , a chipped bone on my back a fractured hip
thats about it really lol

lots of us have had broken elbows, which I must say was the most painful thing ever, having my dislocated elbow put back in was worse than having a baby! I had to have morphine and gas and air for that but I had my daughter with no pain relief at all!!

I have been trying to get a bit fitter but can't run because of my knee, so decided to start bike riding, am struggling with that because my elbow wont straighten properly and it makes it very awkward. My wrist, elbow and back starts really hurting.

In the last 6 months I've broken my collarbone, knackered my knee (torn ligaments) and got a crooked finger... the previous 20 years or so I was relatively unscathed!

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL PF ditto I spent 40 years relatively unscathed apart from the odd concussion then 18 months ago imanaged to hit the jackpot in one fall....Broken shoulder, fractured hip, fractured knee and torn ligaments, broken ankle, major concussion, blind in one eye for a month.

It also appears that when I hit my head I gave all my teeth a damned good rattle as well as over the last year I have done nothing but lose teeth and fillings and the dentist is convinced that it all stems from the accident. I am sitting here now waiting to go to the dentist to have yet another filling replaced...bloody ouch!

Sometimes I wish my parents had pointed me in the direction of Ballet not horses!

First time I rode in 20 years, i hacked out with a friend. She cantered past me and mine thought he would join in as well. He dropped his shoulder and I went straight over his head. I was taken to hospital where the said i was just badly bruised. 10 months on after being on crutches as i was in so much pain, it was decided I had broken the bottom of my spine, 7 fractures in my pelvis, and 2 breaks in my pubic bone. Slightly more than badly bruised!!!!!

Feel quite queasy reading some of this lot!
blush.gif

I'm very very lucky, never had more than bruises. Only had 3 major-ish falls I can think of- one where I was thrown into a brick wall (admittedly found moving difficult after that but refused let my mother call an ambulance and marinaded myself in a hot bath instead) one where I was dumped on a concrete track (just soreness) and last weekend 3 falls in one night but again they were just gentle landings (and my own fault for not sitting up!) so was just achey. Other falls have been completely my own fault for not paying attention and gentle tips off out the side door etc.
Tho what are we betting that I am now going to suffer a horrific fall now?!

i was kicked in the stomach when i was 13 by my pony she didn't mean it she had been on box rest and my YO brought her out on the yard to check her leg and i was behind her as the horse she had had a fight with was on the yard and she double barrelled me in the belly i flew across the yard broke my shoulder on landing, i had 2 perfect hoof prints on my belly they the paramedics thought i was bruised took me to hospital and i was left in A&E for 2.5 hours when i told the nurse i needed the toilet she told me 'your legs still work it's over there!' i got up and started throwing up neat blood! 3 pints of blood in bowls and a few x rays later they found out my intestines had been ruptured! 4 hour op later i was in intensive care for a few weeks and have a great scar downt he centre of my belly (with the weirdest looking belly button as they cut through it then tried pulling it all back together lol) still can't digest lots of food at once, drink fizzy drinks, or alcohol (although that might just be my preference!) and have the worst stomach cramps at random times but hey ho thats horses! ditto laura wheeler wasn't allowed to ride for x amount of months, 4 weeks later my mum comes to pick me up from the yard and see's me cantering around on bracken hunched over and arm in a sling lol!!
