horse rescues more than doubled

Yes it is a sign of the times. Rehoming is a problem.

I know that several years ago when I was looking for a horse ( I could afford to buy one) but would have preferred to give money to a charity, I approached ILPH and discovered they had a waiting list for ridden horses.

I recently did an internet search of a number of charities and found again that most of the horses/ponies available for rehoming had 'problems'.

That is the difficulty in this climate. Horse-lovers do not have cash to take on a rescue who can only be a companion and/or may need special care. It is sad that many folk with kind hearts no longer have deep pockets.

The new Animal Welfare Act has become a double edged sword for these centres. In the past a horse had to have actually been quite cruely treated before any action could be taken but now horses can be removed before that stage is reached.

This is great news for the horses but not so great for the 'rescue' centres who now have more to deal with.

World Horse Welfare (ILPH) have not had a waiting list for many years and now operate through their website. It is simply not true that they only have 'broken' horses and this myth puts off many people from even looking. I have a fantastic horse on loan from then who has gone on to do briliantly in dressage and showing. If you look on their website they have many fantastic riding horses looking for homes. Please have a look if you are in a position to get a horse, you might just get yourself a little star.

There are many people still happy to take on a problem horse if it is healthy.

I did a rescue on a horse last May, who I turned away for 6 months, then started to get fit, a girl on the yard now has him on loan, she is fantastic with him and I could not want for a better loan person. The horse is 17hh TB and quite strong. I was trying to rescue a horse last September - Cash King - who has been in the national newspapers for bringing to light the plight of ex-racers, I was going to buy him but a stupid journalist wrote about what was happening, blamed the wrong people, I got in shed loads of trouble and was made homeless with 3 horses, Cash is now at Heroes in Wantage, where hopefully he will be rehomed - he needed 6 months or a year off - which I was OK about giving him, however - these charities charge a monthly fee for having a horse from them (£20 per month where CK is), where as if they did not I would have had him with me when I had got myself sorted (within a week). So I know that many people will take on loans or a cheap horse (long story) if they know about one or is easy to take on. I would take on another horse now for re homing had my 18 year old not had colic surgery 2 weeks ago and given me an 8k bill!
