AS the title says!

Fiver comes back tomorrow after being out on loan for 3 years and I'm torn whether to keep him here for myself as long as my back and hips hold up, advertise for a sharer or find him a new loaner. What do you think would be best?

Bit of background; I bred him,he was the fifth foal, hence his name, born '90, 16.1+, by Embla Statesman out of TBx mare (who started me breeding, blame her!) He's done a bit of everything, was BSJA registered at one time but doesn't have any points, and has been used as a Mum's horse to lead out the children while he's been out on loan; he's also hunted, riding club, done very local working hunter etc. He's only coming back because she's run off her feet now looking after the four competition ponies they have so no time or space for him. He's a nice boy to handle, only thing I can fault him is when riding alone, he'll sometimes put in a nap (never bucks or rears) but you can usually back him past whatever it is; he also pretends to be scared of traffic but if in company never puts a foot wrong - you'd almost think he was a chestnut mare sometimes!

In some ways, I'd love to keep him but don't know whether I truly have the time or even the inclination to ride again, will have to see on that one I think. Selling is not an option as he belongs to someone who emigrated with the condition he was always in my ownership even if I loaned him out. and I wouldn't break that trust. Hopefully, I'll be able to tell more when (if) I ride him on Saturday and see how things go. Until then, suggestions please!

Post him to me

Not helpful, I know.

By the sounds of it, a loaner would be a better option as your time may be taken up and if you don't want to ride again he would be wasted.

Why don't you put him on short term loan to give yourself time to think it over?

TBH I would try and wait. With Christmas etc just being over, not many people seem to be looking. I heard ones talking that both selling/loaning is v.slow at the minute.

Ha ha. Shall we start a 'I put my horse on loan, but it came back' club?
I am in the same boat with Emerald, he is actually very green still, but also very talented and half of me wants to keep him and the other half wants to sell him, tried loaning with the option that he could come back for any reason, and guess what?
He sounds lovely, just the sort I would like my mum to have, but she has her mare at livery and cant afford 2.
I will keep me ears open for you.

Me too - I have a lovely big boy come back - and like MFH0_9, am not sure that I actually want to ride at all. I'm using the time of year as my excuse and giving horse a holiday as he hasn't settled very quickly. Waiting to see what things are like in Feb............. and will eventually get on him!

Me too - except it's a fabby childs pony. I have decided to sell him in a few months - if I can. It's a very hard decision though.
