Horse riding is easy you just sit there

Annoys me too!

I always get the "you just sit there and the horse does it all" comment. No, if i just sat there my horse would just stand there and probably eventually wander off in search of food!

Also get, "why do you need a lesson, I thought you could ride?"

And also people at work cannot see any difficulty in jumping anything under 4ft as "a horses legs must be about 3ft, they can just step over the jump". Well no, that's why its called jumping!!! they have the JUMP it!

I have known a few motorcycle racers who think that WE are all mad for getting on horses :p :D

Ditto - I quote: "I'll stick to something that doesn't have a mind of it's own, thanks!". Saying that, bikers tend to have a bit more empathy for coming off something at speed.

In regards to "you just sit there", my response is always "come 'sit' on Rods, then!". They get the same response when the "ploddy cob" comments come out, too :P

Oh we get ploddy cob comments awell :P

"How can tha5t fat lump jump ? " Thats the same ploddy lifeless cob who gallops on stubble fields and gets over excited and bucks you off haha :P

In all honesty, some people do just sit there while the horse does all the work. But, I do get what you mean. When I first met bf, he used to say how easy it was, & being close to 15 stone there was only one horse I would happily let him get on as a complete beginner. It has two paces, slow walk & slow jog. So he wasn't convinced it was difficult even after having a go. Then I had the job of schooling a 15hh pony, who'd basically done nothing but hack, but was very forwards & thought it should tank everywhere. And had a habit of standing up, broncing, & generally launching itself about if you didn't let it charge off. I got bf to have a very quick sit on the yard (over height sec d) in walk & a few strides of trot, & he soon wanted off because the movement even in walk was too much. Then got him to accompany me on a hack whilst it did its usual misbehaving the second it got off concrete. He stood with his mouth open, whilst I sat out its performing. All the time calmly continuing to chat about random things to him. Only response was '**** me'. When pony had settled (until next field at least) he was full of comments like 'how on earth do you not even move when it was doing all that?' And later he admitted that while he had been partly winding me up before, he hadn't realised just how much it took to ride well, rather than just walking on a plod. And nobody was prouder than him the day tanking pony completed his first group hack without misbehaving, you'd think I'd hacked a freshly captured mustang.

Haha my fella was the same so I said ok then prove me wrong al pay for you to have lessons he did and after his first lesson he watched me ride after not riding for 4years and thought I was amazing lmao! Bless him I am just your basic plod rider but it did give me a nice boost :-). Unfortunately he decided to stop riding after 8 lessons cause he just could not understand rising trot and couldn't cope with the pain for the few days after. Haha so anyone who ever says that to me I just offer to pay for a lesson for my own amusement and go 'ha told u so'

I also found that a girl on my yard had a 30k showjumping horse yet she got on my bombproof welsh cob at the time and could not ride what so ever got off and said my horse was strong and difficult ha I had kids riding him hmmm

I obviously have a different mindset from most posters on this thread :(

If someone said that to me, and they have, I just agree, I simply don't feel the urge to correct them or prove otherwise.

I see what you mean enfys. Random aquaintances, no doesn't bother me. Listening to boyfriend tell me it doesn't require any skill or effort, no, he had to be educated.
