As part of that "Change For life" campaign that all the primary schools across the country seem to be doing, at my son's school, the kids were sent home with a letter asking parents to list sports activities their children do outside of school and return it.
I guess they were discussing in my son's class about what activities everone does and my son mentioned horse riding, as that is what we do! He said that one of the teachers said that horse riding isn't a "real sport" but a hobby!!
At 8, he's no William Fox-Pitt but he enjoys the plod down the lane on 35-year-old Beauty and it's a whole lot healthier than what some of his friends do on their time off from school (one friend watches Scooby Doo videos all through school holidays!!).
I find it astounding that with all this "childhood obesity" and how everyone's going to get fat and die crap that gov keeps shoving down our throats, that someone would dismiss an activity where you have to have flexibility, stamina, strength and is a recognized Olympic discipline as classed as some sort of no-effort hobby like stamp collecting or playing sudoku (LOL, no offense to either of these two hobbies but let's face it, you don't need to be in shape to do either and can do those in your jammies!).
Anyways, I wrote horse riding on his form as well as cycling (it's a round trip of two miles to and from his school each day that we bike, not counting the distance to the stables after school) so I shall see what they say!
