Hello,
Please can i hear people's experiences of the horse riding stimulators? I have never tried one before but I am wanting to book on to have a go - there is one fairly local to me run by someone I know. My left side/leg is a lot weaker than my right side so I wonder if a few sessions on this will help me with my position etc.
Would love to hear about your experiences! Thank you :)

I used one and it was really interesting. I look wonky on a horse due to some issues with my back and we always thought I was heavy handed with my left hand and putting more weight onto my right seat. The simulator showed different through and I was surprisingly more equal than we thought. They do feel different to a normal horse and it definitely feels horse rather than pony with regards to its movement. I would suggest booking a session and see how you feel before making a block booking

Err they are actually called simulators and not stimulators. Just so you know, you might get a few sniggers of the men if you continue to call them that :)

I have to remember to refer to hard hats on site as hard hats and not helmets as I get the same!

I'd love another go on one, I sat on a simulator once at Your Horse Live when YHL started off at my local Riding Club before they outgrew the venue a year later. No queues because it was their first year.

I have had a few goes on one, set for dressage with a linked screen so you can ride dressage tests of varying levels.
At 15.2 it was the same height as ‘my’ RS Welshie but somewhat slimmer!
The upside was discovering that despite my cronky back I am perfectly balanced. I had to take a much firmer, more pressured grip of the reins. Unfortunately the place did not have an experienced instructor so I decided to do an Elementary test just for the hell of it (I’m strictly Prelim level) and wasn’t too bad until eliminated for going into the car park twice 🤣
Definitely have a go! It was great fun, I would do it again like a shot if there was a proper instructor, you can learn a lot.

I went for a session after recommendations on line. On a plastic horse. No screen with scenery nor dressage tests.

It was not good. I am physically crooked. It is no good imagining that sitting on a rocking plastic machine will correct the infirmities of a 60 or 70 year old rider.
After the machine session, the RS owner told me I was so bad she would never accept me as a student in her school. It hurt to be told how bad I was and unteachable. But it turned out that was her problem. I just went on riding elsewhere.

OH and I had many lunge lessons by a skilled teacher, without stirrups and sometimes bareback. I learned how to correct my balance, which is especially bad on the left rein. Learning how to steady myself on a living animal was important and I was also taught feel. Feeling the horse and communicating through my seat seems to work well for me, though I was told it made no sense to some others.

The central thing about riding (I think) is that it is between you and the horse. I am not a brilliant rider but both my share horses have got to know me. There is a secret intimacy, which you never get with a machine.
