I fell in love with a cob i was exerccising who's been out of work for years. He is stocky, wide and overweight. Brought him back into work and was going well. he had horrible trot which improved, but dreadful canter. So we just hacked to lose the weight and worked on trot.

Decided to buy him and he failed vetting. This was due to his right hind leg rotating out and round instead of back and forward. Vet says its a hip problem but couldn't pinpoint what it was unless he went in for full checkup. he's not my horse so I didn't want to put money into him unless i owned him. Current owner won't get osteo or back person up either.

I have been offered him for nothing now due to failed vetting so I'm half tempted to take a chance and take him. First call would be osteo and then vet. At the moment he is happily hacking away and works nicely in trot, so vet said he's capable of doing that easily. It's just cantering in circles and jumping he find hard.

Has anyone had anything similar with their horse? His right hind leg goes sideways and out in a circle instead of matching the forward and back motion of the left one. Anyone had anything similar of know what the issue might be?

Could you get a good physio out to give him the once over before you take him on?

Personally I would pay for him to go in for a lameness work up before taking him on as you don't want to take him on to find he's got problems which lead to you ending up with a horse you can't ride.

If he's swinging outwards it could be a hock issue? Maybe you could upload a vid?
