Horse Rugs Debate

Hi,

after reading the facebook fan page of equestrian clearance today @ Facebook-Equestrian Clearance I noticed there was a small debate going on around the health and wellbeing improvement from using horse rugs. My horse is nearly 15 years old and Im sure couldnt do without a rug for the winter. So my question is, do you think there are any health benefits from using a rug?

only for a horse that needs to maintain weight or has health issues.

it makes me cringe when i see horse rugged (not fly rugged) in 20c plus.

Probably best...its looks like you are advertising the site.

IMO...depends on the horse. 2 of mine would be the size of a transit van if I rugged them...the other one needs rugging appropriately because he gets miserable in the cold/wet and loses condition.

All but one of mine could survive quite well without blankets, I rug them because it keeps them warmer and they eat less.

Purely mercenary on my part.

Why feed the weather?

Turnout rugs, prevent rain scald.... For elderly or underweight horses it allows them to utilise calories better and therefore help to gain weight. Of course the obvious clipped horses need them to replace the coat clipped off.....
