Hi everyone, I am hoping you can help me find a good rug for my mare. She is going on 17. I have had her on Cosequin for months now. In the early months of this year when it snowed, she went down & she couldn't walk good at all. I had to put her in the stable over night while the weather was bad. She made a good recovery in the spring. But now the rain as started over the last week & the cold starting at night, she is down a laying down a lot again. The vet said she didn't need a rug as she gets a good winter coat on her. But I had to put her in the stable again tonight as she find it hard getting back up again this afternoon. It looks like it is starting all over again, but early this time.
I know she will need a rug, but no idea where to buy one from.
Any help at all please. Thank you :)

I'm assuming you are talking about an outdoor rug? Perhaps a little more info? Size etc. Has she worn rugs before? Does she keep weight on?

Cosequine is something she will probably have to be on permanently - or something similar. The fact she is struggling to get up worries me. I think youreally need to have a chat with your vet. Perhaps you can post some piccies?

Thanks for replys. Yes it is an out doorrug I am after. I had the vet out every week to see her when the snow hit us early in the year. It is the first time the weather had bothered her. That is when she started to go into the stable over night & then she picked up no end. She went back into the field all day but with no rug. She is 16 & half years old. It is arthritis that is the problem. The weight started to fall of her when she first started with the poblems in the year & then started to put it all back on again when the weather picked up. She's started to lose the weight again since the weather as turned cold & wet. She is back in the stable over night now. But before this all started to happen to her, she was out 24/7. She as never had a rug before. I was hoping not to have to use one now, but I can see she will need one. The vet told me not to use a rug in the beginning of the year as she had a good winters coat on her. But I can see that she is struggling with the cold days & nights & not to happy in herself when the weather is wet & cold.
I will be keeping her on Cosquin for the rest of her ilfe. I am on my 4th tub now since the beginning of the year.
I don't want a rug that is to thick & heavy to start her off with as I think it would be to much for her. I have heard you can get rugs that are light & then buy ‘under rugs’ that can double the weight of a medium rug. Or a fleece (I think) to add warmth.
I don't want to make her feel to warm.
It is hard when you have never used rugs before & I want to make sure it is right for her.
Thanks for any help at all :)

Can you borrow any rugs from friends to try on her? If you can that will help you to not only work out what size she is but also what make/style fits her best.

I have found that Horseware and Bucas rugs fit my chestnut mare beautifully, however for the Horseware rug she needs a size bigger than she takes in a Bucas rug. So she needs a 6ft Bucas or a 6ft3 horseware.

My bay mare is similar in height to the chestnut but she is alot bigger around the chest. I have found that a 6ft Shires rug fits her beautifully.

If your horse is big chested then the Shires rug is wonderful. Hopefully Horseware rugs will fit your horse because they have a wonderful liner system. You could get a Horseware Rhino and a liner that attaches to it. If you want something a bit cheaper than the Rhino, the Horseware 1200d Amigo rugs are fantastic. :)

Thank you both for replys & wooooow Faracat :D thank you so much for all your help. I am off to look at all the rugs now lol
I need a rain sheet for her. It is raining all day yet again here. The wet weather makes her ill, she lays down when she is in the rain for long. I know I do not want anything that is to warm for her, but to take the chill off her when it is very cold. I want to keep her in the field at nights, but cannot just yet while it is raining through the night. The cold sets into her while she is getting wet & she won't go into the open stables in the field when it is pouring down. The other horse goes straight in, no messing lol I wish she would.
Thank you so much :D
