My horse has become scared of storms, runs for cover when it rains and then is a nervous wreck until it stops has anyone ever heard of any horse being scared of weather?

Has he got company and a really safe field? Is he a youngster? I only ask because I would have said that any horse is far, far more used to ghastly weather and storms than us feeble owners. However, at my friend's yard they left a week old foal out with her mum in one of the recent terrible thunder storms/tropical downpours and the foal must have run around in a panic and caught its leg somehow and they found it with a broken leg in the morning. Have to say, if I had a week old foal and the weather was expected to be terrible, they would have been brought safely in. Shocking. But it does show you how anxious and accident prone some neds are.

yes he has a pony for company and he is 9 and has always lived out this problem has been slowly getting worse since March when we had some awful hail storms but I didnt realise it was the rain causing the problems at first so have gone down the route of checking teeth, tack, alergies, moving yards fields etc. He has all the symptoms of head shaking but it absolutely only happens when it rains if its a dry day I can ride for hours or he will graze outside. I read somewhere that some horses get upset in windy weather for instance as it affects their hearing and that makes them anxious.

I find that high winds upset my normally very quiet and laid back horse, to the extent that I will bring him in if it getting very windy, having him once jump out and jump over a cattle grid.

My TB gets very freaked out in hail and thunder storms. I've had him since he was 4yrs old and he's now 10yrs old and no better. He lives in and doesn't go out in bad weather. If it's hailing or thunder it's not safe to go in his stable. I'm afraid I don't know what to suggest though.

Thanks for your reply, I have wondered if its a noise problem and have tried riding in a mask and putting a fly fringe on to cover his ears but altho he gets frantic in heavy rain he also reacts altho less to just a few gentle drops which is before he can hear anything.

Thanks for your reply you are the first person I have found that has had anything similar as a problem. I have been keeping him in but I cant do it long term plus he needs some turnout and because he panics even if it just starts a few gentle drops of rain I would have to be there all the time he is out.
