What is everyone thinking about the horse market, has it picked up slightly or not?

I have had a 3 year old chestnut TB colt for sale for about 2 months now. We are literally giving him away for £1000 to cover costs because we need to downsize. Have had 2 people out to see him and one offered £800 which we declined.

He does have 1 sarcoid on his chest which fell off. I do think this has put a lot of people off him but his temperament is flawless. He is a colt although you wouldn't think it, his manners are impecable, he is ridden by a 15 year old, is working nicely and rounding nicely and has a good mentality. Would suit a young teenager for PC stuff.

Why can we not sell him? Or is the market still bad out there?

The market is fine for in demand types, those not in demand will still sell if priced correctly.

Your horse is in the not in demand catagory!
3yo colt does not fall under an every day rider PC/RC home type. Add to that a sarcoid and you are struggling.

Personally I would have taken the £800 offer.

If you want to make this horse more saleable then geld him and hang onto him for another year until he is 4.

im currently looking for a new horse, and please dont take this the wrong way but i keep seeing horses that are way overpriced.. well imo.

the tb market is nuts.. 4k for a x racer that hasnt done a thing?

id also think that gelding your lad was a good idea. and get him to an inhand show or 2 just so hes done something., then ask 2k for him. well ok maybe not that much, but if you have a look at the price of tbs you will be shocked!

Mmm we thought we had priced him at the right price. His temperament is absolutely outstanding for a 3 year old and the last person that came to see him on Saturday thought he was amazing and flawless, just a bit on the small side for her.

We aimed him at £1000 uncut, which I thought was reasonable but what would you all say should be the price for him?

Ben and Jerrys - If we were to geld and hang onto him for another year (which is a possibility and has been talked about) what would you think would be his selling price next year as a 4 year old gelding?

How long is a piece of string?

On the assumption he isn't pig ugly, is sound, viceless, has no massive confo faults, will hack alone/company and is happily popping round small sj/xc and capable of prelim dressage then I would be fairly confident you could get at least 2.5K.

If he is showing some talent and he is marketed correctly then I wouldn't be surprised if he sold at 4K

If he were mine and I had the facilities to keep him fairly cheaply I would geld him, work him gently hacking/light schooling for next 6 months, take him out cubbing/hunting a few days. Then in spring of 4yo year do some PC/RC clinics and a handful of unaff comps and advertise as a genuine allrounder suitable for PC/RC home, advertise at 3.5K and be prepared to take an offer. If he turns out to be a superstar then advertise as young event horse and possibly up the price a bit.

I think the market is slow, especially for youngsters atm. I think your colts main problem will be the sarcoid, that will put a lot of people off and at the moment as its a buyers market, people will look for another youngster without a sarcoid. Secondly i think gelding him will create a lot more interest as most people wont even contemplate owning a 3yr old colt, especially if they are in livery yards etc.
I agree with Ben & Jerry's in that you should have taken the £800 offer.
