I am sharing a horse that is completely uninsured. The owner is happy to pay should the horse fall ill unexpectedly or get hurt in the field, but I need to be insured should he have an accident while I am riding him, or while we are taking him out in the trailer etc. He is worth 7,000 and I would like him insured for as close to that as possible. However, I do not want to have to do a 2 or 5 stage vetting because I am only sharing him for 2 months.

Does ANYBODY know of the kind of deal I should be looking for here, and where I could get one... getting very confused by the websites at the moment. Any help much appreciated.

Why would you bother getting him insured if the owner doesn't want to? Also, I don't think you'd be able to insure someone else's horse anyway! If the owner chooses to let you take her valuable horse out uninsured, that's her prerogative - you should not be held liable by her if anything happens to him.

What you do need is rider's insurance (NFU used to do this for around £50/yr) and public liability - which you will get if you're a gold BHS member.

Basically the owner is fine if he gets hurt due to her but is unwilling to pay if I should damage him, very tricky situation! I am already insured for public liability, its just a case of getting insurance just for accidents.

What does it say in your share contract?

As far as I'm concerned, her horse, her problem. I would never expect a sharer to pay for vets bills etc - if a sharer did something totally negligent which then caused damage to my horse, that's a different matter; but if you allow someone else to ride your horse, then you take responsibility for that and all that goes along with it.

I'd tell her where to stuff it ;)

I don't think any insurance co would let you insure something that does not belong to you. How would the owner prove an accident was 'your' fault?
if your hacking and he stumbles and does a tendon - is it your fault or pre existing weak tendon
What if your having a nice canter and he drops dead of a heart attack?

If you ride him really hard in this hot weather, don't cool him off and chuck him in a stable with no water/ hay and he colics 24 hours later - will she prove that?
