Ive been looking for a horse share and came across one that sounded amazing until she said the horse is 24 years old.
Do you think thats too old?

If the horse is what you want and can give you what you need from the sport then age shouldnt matter, especially as it is only a share not a loan or to buy. You should at least give the horse a chance

It depends on what you would like to do with the horse and what the horse is capable of. I had a 19yr old WBxTB did some small local shows, a bit of hunting etc until she was 23yrs old. Had another horse on loan who was supposed to be 16yrs old v. good jumper jumping 2'9 + with ease turned out he was 26 :D

As others have said, dependent on her health and what you want to do then why not. Over to you was still doing badders at 19/20 after all. Plenty of oldies go on and are best kept in regular work :)

My share horse is 20 years old, more like 20 years young! She is great, definately give it a try- don't write off the golden oldies :)

A friend of mine still has her 35 yr old event pony that still plodges round with my nieces and does local shows etc. If they are kept in work and are fit and healthy then there is no reason why not... Could have years left in it yet!

I don't think that 24 is too old. I became a sharer of a 21y/o TB mare in Feb and I expect to have many more fun years with her! :-) If you think the horse would suit what you want to do, go for it!

I won our riding club cup for the horse for the most points through the year on my 23 year old 14.2 - I was 25 and 5ft 10. She did everything - SJ Xcountry, dressage, showing, gymkhana games, 15 mile sponsored rides etc. She retired at 28 with a splint and died within a few months. I think it was working that kept her going.

Before I bought my horse a few months ago I shared a >30 yr old mare for a few years - she was ACE. Very fit for an old girl, would still be raring to go once you'd had your first canter, would happily beat all the younger horses at a full on gallop! we still do the odd (little) clear round with her.
depends what you want to do with the horse obviously but I don't think the age outright should be an issue - the fitness/temperament/arrangements etc is much more important imho...
