Horse Sharing Dangerous - Rider Killed

Good morning beautifuls mum :D

I found the article ridiculous!! The poor women who owns the horse is basically being accused of murder through lies!

Nearly all of the article was nonsensical...... if you share a horse it's your responsibility to do a risk assessment and see others ride on a main road, or get used to it somewhere quieter, but she may well have done this, horses bolt sometimes, especially with new riders if they are insecure...we know nothing about this story other than it was tragic,

Dreadful, it makes it sound like the owner was in some way responsible.

This poor lady was obviously very experienced, and in that case you make your own judgement on whether you can handle the horse. I sounds like a tragic accident.

The Americans do amuse me though. They think because they are not safety concious and wear safety helmets that the rest of the world is the same.

If the article was entitled "riding is dangerous" it could have had some credence, but seems like just another scaremongering news article to me

Tragic story, but agree that the DM is useless. What on earth has sharing got to do with this very sad accident?

Typical daily mail!
They love incinuating manslaughter I know I have been at the receiving end of it.
The poor owner of that horse must be devastated and unfortunately accidents do happen imagine how she felt reading that article! Barstewards!!

God knows if the DM actually employ any trained journalists any more - this is two separate articles twisted into one - at the end of the day a riding accident has caused a death. RIP poor rider, and huge sympathy to the owner of the horse.

Very disturbing writing.

"Jealousy is also an issue, you wonder if the horse likes them better than you"

What on earth!??? I'm sorry but if somebody overestimates their abilities and is overhorsed it has nothing to do with the horse being jealous.

Very sad story, but something that could happen whether sharing or not, and I doubt that the horse is 'obviously dangerous' when he is stilll being safely ridden out.

I wanted to comment on there to say what a piece of crap article that is, but I cant remember the log in I made from last time when there was article that made me

The DM really is an uphaulling rag.

Haha !! I only glance over it now, I'm a telegraph online reader now (is that very bad ??).

What i really do detest about the DM is their crap journalism, and the pics they randomly put up of animals eating each other alive and god knows what.

But this article is just outstanding as a poor example - poor Mister.

This is really sad, but nothing to do with sharing.

Very sad but it's to with horses not sharing very silly piece of writing but must be very unpleasant for the owner and her family .
Awful things like that are no ones fault in most cases.

Probably not an ounce of truth in it. If you believe that tripe, you will believe anything...

:D

i dont think the journalist realises that horses are flight animals and have their own mind. how is horse sharing dangerous. its coming across to me that buying a horse off someone is dangerous - which it is - and so is sharing; but you risk that and i the horse wouldn't have done that for the sake of it!

RIP

It's the daily mail so I very much doubt anyone believes it and if they do more fool them. Terrible shame though about the girl being killed, just a stark reminder of how unpredictable horses can be.

such a sad loss of life, thought go out to the family and all involved.
the article was appalling tho! and i still feel a bit confused about:

"Jealousy is also an issue, you wonder if the horse likes them better than you"

i dont think i have ever thought that in my life?

I have told this story many times on here before. But for those fo you who don't know it, here goes. It does point out that some owners are very dishonest but also the potiential sharer needs to ask the right questions.

I was looking for a safe happy hacker, I was a confident rider and had been riding 11 years. Although I wouldn't say I'm an experienced rider, I'm not a novice. I went to view a 16.2 18YO ex racer, he was described as a plod in his advert. Owner seemed lovely and Horse was nice too. Owner suggested we go on a hack as she could ride a friends Horse out with me. We set off and rode down the lane. Horse was a bit looky but fine. Turned torwards home and Horse was much more forward (as most Horses are) we decided to take the longer route and go on the field, as soon as the Horse stepped on grass his head shot up in the air (no martingale, almost knocked my teeth out!) and he started bouncing around. Not so much for the plod I was looking for. Kept circling him and talking to him. Was just about to ask owner if we could swap as he wasn't what I wanted and he bolted with me. I don't mean a take the mick and run off tank either. He was flat out galloping and there was no stopping him. I tried everything and it made no difference. When we got to the road I did consider jumping off, but couldn't bring myself to do it. Luckily we met no cars. He then slid over into the side of a buidling, my leg went through a hollow concrete pipe, which snapped in half and tore of the wall. My other foot was wedged in the stirrup so when he got up I did too. He then proceeded to bolt. He was heading torwards a road called the Crooked Mile, it is a 60MPH very busy road. He then spun and galloped into the stable block, luckily some people had seen us go in and went to the other side to block him off, where he finally stopped.

I looked down and saw blood seeping through my jodpurs and the Horse was shaking all over and dripping with sweat. The owner got back to the yard and got in my face shouting at me. She said I wasn't experienced enough for him and now he will be lame again. After asking what she meant she said to me hae had been on 6 months boxrest and I was the first person to sit on him. No TO/lunging/schooling etc. I was completly niave to trust her and not insist I watch him ridden first and I am lucky that I got away with a scarred leg and no confidence. The Horse had since bolted with another rider and threw his owner off breaking her back. The Horse was PTS.

This is a very sad story, but couldv'e happened wether it was an RS, share, loan or own Horse. It is the owners responsibility to warn the potential sharer though, but the sharers responsibility to ask to see the Horse ridden first. This is a lesson I learned the hard way!

Blimey LaurenBay as a sharer myself i find that one scary story, im glad you are ok now.
What a reckless owner.
I do occasionally feel slightly taken advantage off when sharing as some owners just expect you to cope and be greatful to have a horse to ride.

Bladdy hell LaurenBay! That is one scary story my dear girl. I cannot believe she blamed you after putting you on her box rested horse!!!!

the article was appalling tho! and i still feel a bit confused about:

"Jealousy is also an issue, you wonder if the horse likes them better than you"

i dont think i have ever thought that in my life?

^^ This ^^

A friend of mine shares my big horse (quite a new arrangement) and not once have I been concerned about him liking her more than me. I actually think he does like her more than me because a) she rides him less and b) she doesn't put any expectations onto him whereas I always have done (despite trying not to). He can be real miserable git (horse not friend!) but he's taken to her straight away, although he's known her for a while and she did ride him a few times while her own horse was on box rest. For me it's brilliant that he "likes" her so much, what does it matter who the horse likes more as long as it's happy? My horse likes his sharer and is happy so I'm happy.

Very bizarre article.

This accident was a terrible tragedy and my sympathies to all those concerned.
Regarding Laurens post above there are unfortunately people that will not be completely honest about their horses character and behaviour.
Having said that I had two sharers that rode my horse out when I was in London and they would merrily plod him about all over the place. Luckily the only time he ever took exception to anything was when I was waiting at red traffic lights at the end of the Mall and a load of pidgeons decided to take off in Trafalgar Square which must have scared him and he cantered through the red traffic lights and down the mall towards Buckingham Palace. (We did manage to get back to a walk just in front of Buckingham Palace).

God, when I first read LaurenBay's story, thought it was her leg snapped in half not the pipe!! Stupid owner!!
The DM aricle is very sad. Nothing to do with sharing though. I wonder if the 'obviously dangerous' statement is a typo, as within the context of the sentence, it just doesn't read quite right.
If not a typo, how on earth did they deduce he was 'obviously dangerous' ??
Badly written article, scaremongering for non horsey people to attract attention to their miserable right wing fit-for-bog-roll so called 'news'paper.
Don't think anyone who was considering sharing would take any notice of such *****e. Tragic accident. Could happen to any of us. Feel so sorry for the poor kid who owns the horse :(

I ended up with a broken pelvis after sharing a horse which turned out to be too much for me! I was honest with the sharer about my ability - sharer had the horse on loan. I found out later said horse had been too much for their owner and hence put on loan. I only had 10 weeks on crutches because of it so I guess I was lucky. She nearly took off with me out on a hack previously but I managed to stop her do it could have ended up worse.
I'm not saying that is the case in this instance but people can be pretty loose with the truth, whether it is selling or sharing.

Its devastating for the ladies family as well as the horses owner I am sure. But I am with all those who have said it could happen whether buying, loaning or sharing and although tragic a horse is a horse and cannot always be predictable.

LaurenBay your story is horrific and extreme! What an idiot owner, I have tried about 10 horses now most for full loan and a couple of shares. I have got on first every time but will now be asking to see the owners get on first. Its funny when I was buying owners always got on first in order to "show them off", never been the case with the loans.
