Just in the thinking stage at the moment of advertising for a sharer. I'd like someone to ride my horse properly for a start as my daughter and I are both novicey. Would be interested to hear your stories on sharers, good and bad. Also is it fair to get them to pay towards costs and help with mucking out etc, or would you do one or the other???

I had a sharer when I was at college - I lived in so she looked after my horse in the week and exercised him to keep him fit for me to compete at weekends. It worked really well - I didn't ask for any money from her though. I think one or the other is fair. It depends what you want from them really, I suppose.

ive just ended my sharer, wasnt happy with the way she did things, everyone to there own though, not sure i would loan/share again unless i was really really stuck im sorry to say. I just like things done my way with my horses!

personally as a person still looking for a share horse, i would rather help muck out and pay a tenner a week that just pay the money.

I have shared a horse before and it started well but did not end well...she read things on here and took it all in the wrong context, but i still visit her and the horse and we get along ok now!

The workload is fine, I enjoy that. I want her ridden properly of which I have to say at the moment I am not capable, and costs too.

Had two other people sharing my horse in London during the weekdays. Worked very well. I did not charge them and all they had to do was groom and ride. Helped keep my horse ticking over and also meant he had other riders. No problems at all from either of them and 30 years later one of them still occasionally rides one of my horses.

At the moment i am a sharer, and have shared my own horses with others in the past.

With my horse I didnt charge the girl a penny as the time she gave me (I was at uni) was enough........

My current share I pay a pitance of £50 a month for, for 3 days a week, but could be more if I wanted, days not cash! I will do everything for both the horse i share and the owners other one though on my days in the evening, as I can get up there much earlier than her.

If its all about having the horse ridden properly then you might have to look to pay someone to "school" her or whatever.........

Have a look on newrider.com always lots of peeps on there looking!

I am sure you will find someone to help ride and school your horse on for you for free. I wouldn't however expect any money or stable chores to be done though, as you might often have to pay for someone to school your horse!

Have to say if you wanted to someone to school the horse for you then I'd probably expect to be paid to do it, if they will be bringing the horse on for a less experienced rider. Although I'm sure you could find a good rider willing to do it free of charge if they're looking for a ride

I'm helping my friend out at the moment with her horses - I school her mare and hack her out aswell as hacking out her horse who has been on box rest for 2 years. I don't pay anything towards them but do buy them the odd thing they may need and do the yard jobs on the days I'm there

I'm currently in the opposite situation and looking for a share horse having shared for 6 years before uni and now missing it. All my previous shares I've paid a small amount and done stable chores. I'm sure you would find someone to school your horse without paying them, if I were closer I'd jump at the chance! Try NFED.co.uk, covers all areas around the new forest, hampshire, dorset, wiltshire etc.

My sharer pays £12 a day to share him, he is totally hers for that day including all PM DIY duties and riding, she does him twice a day and insists on paying for lights for the school herself. She gets a lot of freebie days and I go on holiday about 3-4 times a year and she gets him for free as long as she wants. If he moves a bit further away then I will give her the option of a third day for free, and occasionally if something comes up we change our days around which works out fine. She is a very good rider and really I should be paying her but she has formed such a bond with him she would never accept money off me!

I went half-shares with a pal for my mare years ago, my Da was paying part of the livery bill (I paid all vet, farrier and all other sundries) - she was supposed to pay half the livery bill in exchange for getting to ride every day. At the end of the first month she turned around and said "I haven't got any spare cash" and I had to grovel to my Da to get the money off him...

Not a pleasant memory...
