Has anyone else done this?

I'm thinking of saving my boys shoes and using them for my wedding.

Just as a bit of fun really, does anyone have any creative ideas on how to decorate them? I have a few ideas in mind but would
Love to hear more

I used them as table centres at a wedding, 3 or 4 looped together. I spray painted them with car paint. You can use an appropriate colour. Be careful that they are clean from rust and completely dry otherwise the rust comes through.
It was amusing seeing my friends guessing which shoe belonged to which horse.
Also loads of people wanted to take one home.
You can also get old shoes made into candlesticks etc.

Yes, for my daughters wedding we used them as balloon weights and for decoration. We painted with hammerite first to stop the rust then ivory coloured acrylic paint. Small silk flowers were woven through the nail holes and a little bit of embossing glitter used which just gave a nice shimmer. They make nice keepsakes and are quite cheap to do.

I painted mine in our colour scheme, threaded ribbons threw the nail holes, and had them hanging as pew ends on either side of the aisle :) Two years on, and I have some hanging round the house - I love them :)

All great ideas :) I can't believe it didn't dawn on me sooner to use them.

I especially love the using them as pew ends!

Pinterest is your friend. Look up Bettys Barn on FB for great ideas, also Cans and Roses. I do a lot of shoes, mainly personalised. Sand them down well, then use a rust paint, I think use bog standard acrylic paint and yacht varnish on mine. I have just done an order for a wedding using stirrups, it is not easy to find old stirrups by the dozen :(

I love the pew end idea, flowers and ribbons, novel :)

I was my best friend's bridesmaid and gave her one of my horse's shoes. I painted it with silver Hammerite and threaded blue and ivory ribbon through the nail holes.

My friends mum does them, not sure if she just makes them for friends or if she makes to sell but we have to keep nice ones from time to time.
Think she attaches ribbons and paints them.

This is a little off topic but 2 pics ( I hope )
We did dozens of silver shoes for my daughter's wedding and the other shoe my father did for me on my wedding many years ago.

I did mine just as a keepsake after I lost my boy and they hang in my kitchen. They're painted with hammerite, which was easy enough to apply but took an eternity to dry!! Did three coats on each so they took forever to finish.

We collected my stepson's 12h section A's tiny shoes, sprayed them silver with car paint and used them as balloon weights on the tables at the evening reception. They were really cute, we kept one, but people took home all the others.

My husband has cut and shaped two horse shoes into two interlocked hearts for presents occasionally. One was for a wedding, and I decorated it with tiny painted roses and ribbon in the colour of her wedding colours.

Have them cleaned up with a wire brush - need an electric one or lots of elbow grease, once clean either paint or coat in clear varnish.
Thread fine ribbon through the nail holes, wrapping around the shoe as you go - or from side to side, adorn with flowers.

That's exactly what we did with the silver shoes I posted pics of earlier.

I did about 180 horse shoes for my wedding as both end of pew decorations and the rest as wedding favours/name placements. They were the same colour as debs's are up thread.

They were all given to me by my farrier and me and my friend spent months with an angle grinder (to remove the rust) rust prevention paint and then several coats of a cream spray paint. DH & I had shire horse shoes! We only had about 2 or 3 left at the end of the night so pretty much everyone took theirs home.

Every guest has told me how very much 'me' they were and years later all my friends still have theirs- which is quite something for a wedding favour!

At the end of the day, if horses are as massive a part of your life as I suspect they are (!) then it's the perfect way to give a nod to your loved hobby.

Don't underestimate the amount of time it takes to prep them though!! I'll bet your farrier will happily give you some, all mine came from the yard with the exception of the shire ones and the pony ones I used for children :D

I've got 18 months to start cleaning and rust proofing them and luckily my Dad is handy with all that stuff... He doesn't know he's been volunteered yet though!
