Hi I was wondering if anyone could give us some help. Looking for a first horse for tall 15 year old niece, has currently been loaning a 15.2hh Irish Sports Horse but at 20 he is getting too stiff. Likes to hack, do fun rides and the odd local show. Brother non - horsey so I will be helping and we have a budget of 2.5k to spend including tack! So far this is our short list. Any opinions welcome and cyber biscuits sent :-) oh and we are based in the South East but willing to travel

You are going to spend a lot on travelling to view these as quite far apart. Don't know where in SE you are but have you looked on NFED? Mainly Hants area, but you could perhaps find 2 or 3 in the same area to view.

Just had a quick look at them and with me having gone through the child/horse buying stage this is my opinion, 1st one too small. 2nd one nice, only thing is they've stated mini jumping, does that mean it wont jump say 2'3/2'6 upwards? (you'll be surprised how quickly your neice will learn and kids that age will want to go bigger & faster once they have the confidence) 3rd one would be a no no as they have stated the "would prefer the 1 to 1 relationship" in my experience it means its awkward and you dont want that for a first horse.
But like i said its just my opinion. I've always taken my friend with me who'll push a horse (in a nice way) to see its reactions before we even have it tacked up. If it freaks out if you jump up from say putting oil on its feet then to me its not suitable for a child. As all kids are sometimes daft without their brains switched on. To me safety is paramount everything else can be taught.

I'm south east and am starting to look too - once I've got the pesky overdraft paid off! Bah! I'm a sucker for a coloured and Kent isn't too far....!

how big does you niece look on the 15.2hh she is loaning?

that would give you some idea wether a 15hh would be any good

a six year old would possibly still be green would your niece cope with that?

i prefer the skewbald in all respects. but would the scarring be a problem for you?

dont like the other one and looks like it would be too small for a tall 15yr old

I like the sound of the coloured - looks like a nice sort, nothing fancy but good and honest.

Thanks guys. I also prefer the coloured, and I think a good price too, but not sure if rising 13 is too old. Also the scarring, the lady said it quite a large old barb wire injury which although never caused any lameness, said it is quite unsightly! :-o

13 is a perfect age for your neice. Some of the top eventers are in their prime aged15. Strangley enough for some reason people tend to think anything over 10yrs is an OAP!! If your going to get it vetted they will pick up on its leg and scarring. But if you view and theres no heat and its not lame and it looks like old superfical scarring, i wouldn't even give it a seconds thought. Good luck :)

Adorablealice, i did look up her sire online, 'Miley' and it states he is an ID x TB. The lady said she has a CHAPS passport which i take it means coloured horses?

Number 2 the coloured would be the only one out of those I would consider, seems reasonably priced too. The 'hacks keenly' and spooky alone along with the age would put me off number 1 for a novice and number 3 just doesn't do anything for me.

Miley's dam is listed as 'Molly' and IDxTB type. In other words she is of unknown breeding, as is shown on the All Breed Pedigree. Molly will have a good dose of coloured irish cob/vanner in her. Nothing wrong with that at all, but she should not be classed as ID or TB. CHAPS is the coloured horse society and any type can be registered.

The coloured horse is worth a look at, but ask to to see the passport because there is no colour in TB's or ID's.

In the ad it shows the stallion (Miley) and he is a bay tobiano, so the mare would have got her colour from him. :)

SKEWBALD TBxID 1988 16.1HH 81/2" BONE

BY "IDEA" (TB BY "STAUNCH AVENGER")
OUT OF "MOLLY" (IDXTB TYPE, COLOURED)

Miley is a very attractive marked bay tobiano. He is of good quality and has a very kind temperament. Miley is registered and graded with the Coloured Horse and Pony Society (UK). He was bred in Ireland.

ETA - sorry folks for repeating stuff - I type way too slowly. ;)

The only one I would look at is the 2nd but I am a bit wary of the scarring. 13 is a very good age for a 1st horse, imo. But I would also take on board AAs comments about not being strictly truthful in the advertising and check everything else very carefully.
The 3rd sounds ok but ime a RS will expect to keep their tack, so you would have to buy new on top of the purchase price.

Actually there is such a thing as a coloured TB - I believe there is a user on here that actually breeds coloured tbs to race. There is a long history of coloured tb stallions, they may be rare, but they are out there: http://horsetalk.co.nz/news/2009/01/051.shtml#axzz2cUvgt82v

I'm not suggesting that this is the case with this horse because it almost probably isn't, but there is the possibility.
