We have a young Oldenburg gelding who had a terrible accident that resulted in most of the skin on his shoulder being peeled back & several deep cuts to the muscle. The vet stitched the skin back together & we are now on week 2 of healing.

Do these wounds heal up to look normal? Right now this horse looks like Frankenstein! The vet tells me the horse should be sound & I've looked for similar wound pics on the internet but haven't found much. He's young & had promt veterinary care......it's just hard to look at this wound and imagine it looking ok again. Anyone with some advice?

Sounds a bit like what my ex evener did a few years ago. He thought he could still pop over full size field fences, and bottled it at the last moment, crashing into the strainer.
He degloved his shoulder, and it took 3.5 hrs and more than 60 stitches to fix it. He was 25 at the time!
It was a low heal, and part of the skin did die of and have to be cut away. This left a big triangle of open wound, but it did heal slowly.
He was kept in for the first couple of weeks, but then turned out. Luckily he was never really lame, so we kept him hacking out bareback, as the saddle would have touched it.
We used a shoulder saver for turnout, as this covered most of it. It was really to difficult to keep dressings on it. I think in total it took about 7 moths to fully heal.
He now looks like he has a Mercedes Benz logo on his shoulder.
Its never put him up or down, and he's still in work at 27yrs old.

Glad to hear he was sound! This just looks so terrible right now!

Yup, his looked pretty horrid for a long time. Even more so when the dead area was cut away, as it left a big space.
It takes time, but it healed really well.
We say now if mercedes benz made horses , they'd look like him!
