Horse size

I'm 5'9 with a 34'' leg....at 10yo I was chucked on the 16hh at my riding school!

I ended up buying a 15.1 who I always felt too big for as she is narrow too....but my new boy is about 16hh and still growing.

I rode a 15hb cob recently, he was very wide so I felt ok. I tend to ride very long and so unless the horse is very tall or built like a barrell I feel too big!

Pookie - have you got pics of the horse you are having vetted?

I'm 5'11'' and my girly is 15.2, she is broad and deep but I am still a bit dangly legged on her. I'm fine weight wise though and she is fab so I just put up with it. As long as I'm not knocking jumps down with my feet I reckon I'm ok lol

Op if people think ur over horsed they should see me. I fell in love with my boy or would never have bought so big. I'm 5'2 and he's a good 16.3. I have really short stumpy legs too while he has long slim tb legs!

Excellent :D There seems to be this assumption with some people that for a female to like big chunky horses they must require a weight-carrier to begin with. Constantly surprises me and I've had this for almost 20 years :D

I'm only a shorty at 5'4" with 29" legs :(. My boy is currently 18.2hh and expected to reach 19hh and is as wide as he is tall. I find him easier to ride than smaller mounts that I've owned in the past (my first horse was 15.2) as I'm used to riding horses with a longer stride. Having viewed myself on video schooling him and in photos I must admit I'm surprised to find I don't look like the proverbial pimple on a pumpkin. I tend to ride quote long so dont look overhorsed to be honest. The only problem I've come across so far is cantering and galloping as he has the most mahoosive stride which is quite bouncy so I find it difficult to sit to without feeling like a rag doll in a tumble dryer (cue the suede seat saver and neck strap and occasional Valium). :D

Well I never reached the heady heights of 5ft, so am well practised at the pea on a drum look! Some of the things I used to ride at work I needed a bucket to tack up.
My very tall friend had a 17h at 14, as she was about 5ft 10, but she has since had 15.2's quite happily. I think its what you get used to as much as anything, I sometimes find my little mare (13.2) feels tiny when I haven't ridden her for a while, but not for long!

5 feet 1 and happy on 17.1 and 16.2 middlweights! I do look small, but I ride them effectively, which is what matters. I also get occasional comments about looking "tiny", but tbh what I can't understand is the number of people who are very tall and strongly built who squeeze themselves onto 15.2s! Yet if I went about saying they looked massive on their horses, it would be considered rude. Fair enough if you've had the horse for a while or its a dream combination, but why go out and buy something deliberately on the small side for you? Are people afraid of larger horses?

Yes, bigger horses are best for me, and with a bit of build to take up my leg. I have 34" inside leg and look better on a WB or ID than the average TB of the same height. Although I do love TB's.

I bought this horse as a weanling to make 16.2h. I am 5'7" and no stick insect. He finished a touch over 18hh. Having brought him up myself and had plenty of lessons, he was generally very light to ride, unless he was doing exciting things like the point to point as pictured !. He did medium dressage and is very much missed.
