Being a tad dense here, but I thought there were only two horse slaughterhouses in the UK - Potters and Turners.

Reading all about the horsemeat found in everything, it appears I was wrong.

Hows does this work, I'm intrigued, do all slaughterhouses do horses, or do some do horses on certain days, or what?
 
The horse meat found in the UK products originated in Poland and Romania (at least the Findus stuff).

It is very unlikely there is any British horsemeat in the products.
 
It said on news that there are 8 slaughter houses that do horses in uk. I may have got it wrong but is not the one in yorks being ivestigated for supplying horsemeat and passing it off as beef?
 
I've read reports of 12, 9 and 6 slaughter houses licensed to kill horses in UK so have no idea of the truth.

I don't think we have any idea where the horse meat in any products comes from... the meat travels here, there and everywhere it seems, so who knows when and how many times it's been switched. Meat laundering springs to mind. lol

ps. Bute being found in some samples points me to think that at least some comes from domestic and sport horses in more affluent areas of Europe and possibly elsewhere.

I thought the slaughter house in yorks was sending horsemeat to the plant in wales to process? not sure its all very confusing. So when the "meatman" buys horses and ponies at sales in this country where do they go??

Is it for pet food or does it go abroad??

I know im not asked by vet for my horses passport to record drugs and having recently had to have a horse pts was not asked by either vet or cremation people for the passport which I now find very worrying.
 
There's an abbatoir 10 minutes up the road from me that does horses, has done for years. I'm in West Sussex.
Another one about half an hour away in East Sussex, and yet another one towards Kent.

So there must be loads across the rest of the country.

Another one who's confused, I thought there was only Turners and Potters but I heard there are 5 liscenced to process horses on the news today:confused:

Maybe processing means something different to killing?

Anyway, I think the whole scandal just highlights how horse passports do not work. My girl isn't signed out of the food chain and has had all sorts of drugs.
Bloody glad I'm veggie at the mo.

It's not on the same property as a livery yard is it?

I know one in WS where OH worked briefly and they were very much running a few things illegally and he left for this reason.

Could never ever keep my horses on the same property. Have no problem with it happening, but the smell and sounds of that must affect their daily lives!

Don't you believe it. If you can tune into Radio Four at 5.45am your time you can hear what happened in Ireland. The USPCA worked under cover for two years and discovered some 70,000 horses disappeared, often cruelly loaded onto transport for export and unfit to travel. Criminals were forging passports and buying m/chips on the internet.
