Hi

Has anyone else's horse been really uncomfortable following routine dental rasping?

I was told that he was ok to be ridden straight away but I waited until the next day. He was extremely tight in the body and didn't want me to touch the right rein at all. He wasn't sedated and was fidgeting a lot during the rasping and tensing his neck and body so I wonder if he has muscle pain? I thought about maybe giving him bute for a couple of days.

He might be sore from the tensing so yeah a few bute won't hurt but if his still not right I would ring the dentist.

My 2 fidget a bit so I just give them half a tube of sedalin each and it's just enough to keep them still, maybe give it a try for next time.

If the gums, cheeks or tongue are accidentally caught by the rasp I imagine it would take quite a few days to feel comfortable again and I wouldn’t be using a bit and some painkiller sounds like a good idea. One of the reasons I quite like sedation during a dental visit is the horses are still and the vet doesn’t catch soft tissue in the mouth.
