these horse stealing are VERY real, i live in gloucestershire near Burford, last night an attempted theft of horses was carried out next toburford garden centre, one horse got loose and ran onto A40, not sure if dead (probably). A friend texted me saying 9 horses from one yard and 5 from another, this is quite old but they are planned and obviously good at it. it is very difficult to protect your horses as they will do anything to get them if they want. they have been reported to steal colored, shetlands mainly but ANYTHING is at risk. i live 10 mins from where it was last night so v. worried as we own 5 horses!!! just watch out for any suspison sightings take any photos if possible but probably don't approach as these guys are obviously planned and god knows what they have with them (kinves/guns). im really sorry if these is worrying you but we all need to know that this is a very real threat and is very difficult to prevent asit is all planned. the horses, if taken will probably be sold on very quickly (black market) so if you find your horse missing, scan all surrounding areas first, otify the police, and put info. on horse missing sights so there info. can be circulated as quickly as possible!!!!
if anyone has more info. please post.... all is helpful to everyone!!!

Sigh - wrong, wrong, wrong.
In virtually every detail.

A number of horses got out on to the road, and tragically two of the horses were hit by passing traffic, one died at the scene. Incidentally a person in a car was hurt too.

No guns, no knives, and no east Europeans either

i understand many will think text not true but the recent one in burford is true, police have not released injuries on women in the car that hit the horse but it is true that something happened there last night as people tried to stop them... not sure if succesful but i hope to god they were!!!
HORSE THIEVES - LATEST LOCAL UPDATES
A40 ACCIDENT (11 JUNE 2008)
Various reports are circulating as to whether an attempted theft was the cause of horses escaping onto the road near Sturt Farm, Burford. This report is taken from the Witney Gazette;
"Fire crews were called to a crash on the A40 near Burford last night after a car hit a horse. The accident took place outside Sturt Farm, between Burford and the Asthall Barrow roundabout, shortly before midnight. Firefighters cut the woman driver free from the vehicle but no one from South Central Ambulance was available to provide any information about the woman's injuries."
However a post from the owner to the Oxford Mail confirms that theft was the motivation;
"The horse that was hit was mine. The field he is kept in had been broken into in the early hours, and he fled to the road along with another horse who was put down this morning. I sincerely hope the lady is ok, and would advise any horse owners locally to keep an eye out for thieves."
SPELSBURY THEFTS (MAY/JUNE 2008)
Having emailed club members about the Heathfield attempted theft (see below), a response came back from one member who has heard that 3 horse have actually been stolen from Spelsbury.
HEATHFIELD, nr BLETCHINGDON ATTEMPTED THEFT (JUNE 2008)
Attempted horse theft at Heathfield. The man asked for overnight livery availability and while the girl went to check with the owners the man tried to grab a horse from the field. They stopped him and he drove away. They have reported his number to the Police. The vehicle was a maroon 4X4.
CHARLBURY/CHIPPING NORTON ATTEMPTED THEFTS (MAY 2008)
It has been brought to our attention that horse thieves are operating in the Charlbury/Chipping Norton area. Two incidents have resulted in fencing being damaged in order to attempt to steal horses out at grass. Although, the thieves were not successful, in one case the horse was left severely traumatised and injured and the others escaped on to the road. These are not rumours, as one of the horses's involved belongs to a WORC member.

YES there have been incidents, FFS incidents HAPPEN when you are dealing with livestock and incidents happen around farms and yards EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK, but NO HORSES HAVE BEEN STOLEN and there are NO indications that there have been ANY attempts of burglary.

IT ISN'T TRUE

Call the Police, I beg you, they will back up everything I have said. Call the owner of the yard at Heathfield, they will back up what I have said. Seriously this is getting ridiculous! People thriving on made up drama - ARGH.

I understand that people love their horses more than life itself but seriously, people need to get a grip - check the rumours you are hearing with the Police and let us try and stop these rumours in their tracks.

I think Purdy has information which is a mix of the hoax stories made a few weeks ago and an inflated story of the tragic loss of a horse near A40. Im not local to Burford but from reading the postings it seems that the horses simply got out their field and were not in the process of someone trying to steal them.
Yes we need to be on our guard but as Ive said before too many people crying wolf will give these theives easy pcikings to horses if we all become complacent about these rumours. Yes there are genuine thefts so we need to put 100% facts posted and not rumours.

Well if you have spoken to the police can you let us know what the crime reference number is. Unfortunately Perdy there have been so many posts recently that seem to have whipped up a hysteria in the horse community we do not know what to believe any more. Hence we will not believe unless there is a crime reference number.

The incident did happen Cazza, so there is a crime ref: number attached to the incident. It is the circumstances that differ because the info I got from the Police was different.

RIGHT i've been reading these pages everyday and well i'm sick of people arguing...

If people are sick of these messages why are you posting? (p.s not having a go just asking) I understand its driving you mad with all the reports (i'm also fed up with it all) but people are just concerned and wanting to help others with what they know... true or not...

Is there some way we can just make a thread saying possible sightings... then a thread with confirmed sightings eg ref crime numbers and locations... etc.... at least we know whats happend and what hasn't happend as for yet...

I also have had people take pictures of my horse in field.. but until something happens there is no point me posting any information... the yard owner went through the person car and found bird books even thou he was taking pictures of the horses... what can you do?? the yard owner followed him out of the yard and then took reg and person name and reported it...

People just need to keep a look out and try not to panic...

If its going to happen it will there is no way stoping them... other than just keeping informed by local police and messages about your area.

I have horses at the yard where this happened. It was an attempted theft gone wrong and 2 horses were hit by a car and the lady is critically ill in hospital. We are all totally devestated by this and are struggling to deal with everything. both horses have died, one at the scene and one this morning. Please do not make jokes about this incident it is not a laughing matter. We are also not only upset by the loss and the injured lady but also the childish mindless gossip surrounding this awful situation. This is not a scam nor is it a reason to joke. we have all been very saddened and this will affect us for a very long time. The police are doing their best and we hope that the bastards who did this are caught. Please give us some respect and make jokes about a terrible situation. I hope you all understand that this is very real for us and very upsetting and it hurts to read these some of these comments. Please leave it now.

this is fromsomeone at the yard where it happened2 nights ago so it is true just be careful

Oh I thought a Crime reference number was when there had been a crime (eg. horses stolen, attempted theft) and an Incident number when it was (eg. horses escaped from field, walked through a fence/fence broken).

(goes back to bang head against wall, mumbling, Bad Cazza, Bad Cazza)

perdy.
I DO know the facts. The fact is this has been recorded as a Road Traffic Incident, nothing more - there is NO recorded crime complaint relating to theft or attempted theft of horses and if the people at the yard DID hear a noise it would be just as likely to be the traffic trying to avoid the horses, or the horses bursting out of the field.

Nobody is more passionate about preventing equine crime than I am, believe me, but speculation and gossip are not helpful.

Oh - and tell me more about the attempt on horses around Charlbury and Chipping Norton please, PM the source of the information to me if you like - as I need to nip that one in the bud too

We only need info that is true and concrete(which is what HHO admin have previously asked for). Posting stuff that isn't true is just fuelling not only the anxiety we're all feeling but also the hysteria that has gripped the equestrian world.
